These attacks had to have been planned out quite a while ago. They weren't just about the movie. The movie was just a convenient excuse.
Too many people in the Muslim world have anger-management issues. My religion, Roman Catholicism, gets mocked and insulted in film, TV shows, and the media all the time. But you don't see us ever rioting or killing over it.

Honestly! Some partisan Douche bag makes a movie that is seen as insulting to Muslims. It is promoted by perhaps one of the worst humans alive. Now four people are dead and two countries are suffering violent protests. Ridiculous! If your faith is so fragile that a movie insulting your prophet makes you want to kill another human, you need to reexamine that faith, not act on your homicidal feelings. This is not a few bad apples! This is systemic—I exempt only Sufis as they seem to have moved forward past the need to defend their faith with murder and other violence. The majority of Islam needs to be defanged the way Christianity has been in most of the world so the rest of us don't need to fear dying a senseless death at the hand of ignorant nutters. GROW UP!

Honestly, they seem rather stubborn to change (and as a conservative, I can sympathize with them on that part), but their beliefs on Shariah and customs ought to stay in the Middle East.
Islam needs to be eradicated like a plague. It has no redeeming value and no useful purpose. Islam is a step backwards by 1400 years.
I agree, it has some growing up to do for sure!
One of the problems is that the most conservative Powers-That-Be in the Muslim world keep their women back from full independence and partnership in their society at large. Because of that, the women aren't able to influence their society into being more peaceful and sane (which they statistically are in all the societies I know about.)
And because of that, those countries don't have the kind of thriving middle class that tends to be more sophisticated and educated. That's why only some of the Muslim countries (and only a minority within them) go berserk over these kinds of "insults" instead of all of them. Stand up for full rights for women everywhere in the world and we'll see less savagery and insanity like this.
