Is 'Ugly' Dating Website a Good Idea?

I'm ugly -- you're ugly. Let's make ugly babies together!

This seems to be the basic concept behind uglybugball.com, which claims to be the first dating website for "aesthetically challenged" people. And the agency has already produced its first engaged couple.

"I always thought that I was too ugly to meet Mrs. Right, but my life changed when I met Janine," Tom Clifford, 36, told The Daily Mail. She's beautiful and I love her in every possible way. I still can't believe this happening."

The English carpet fitter, who has been single since 1998, noticed a photo of Janine, 31, on the site in August.

He wrote her the following e-mail, according to the Mail:

"Dear Janine, Just seen your beautiful face on The Ugly Bug Ball and would love to meet up. ...I've got a face that makes children cry but, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- and I think you'll love me too."

After four dates, they got engaged and plan to marry this winter.

"I appreciate that Tom isn't Brad Pitt, but then I'm no Angelina Jolie either," Tom's fiancee Janine Walker told the paper. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to me Tom's the perfect, handsome prince. I'm just so pleased to have been able to meet him, and I'm head-over-heels in love."

Tom and Janine both love junk food and TV dinners, and they both claim to have, ahem, "great personalities." Why not make it official?

Tom said he's "been a joke to women for years" because of the way he looks -- and now he's got a bride and a free honeymoon courtesy of the site.

So is this site a great, even charitable idea, or an ugly, stigmatizing insult? We're going vote for the former! How about you?

At the end of the day, if a person finds it insulting, they do not have to join it. I think it's a good idea. (:

There are few people out there that my be ugly, however the truth is that people are "made" to feel bad about them selves until it turns into a problem for them. so now they can come to a place where they can met others that feel the same way. It is a brilliant idea. Ugliness is in the mind.

If it works, it works! It sounds great, but I can also see how it can be insulting. However if the person joining the site isn't taking any offense, and then the site proves results, who cares!? It works, and these two people seem pretty damn happy about it.

Who cares?? we all know they are really just Hot people who aren't photogenic and when they meet, the other person will be bummed because the other one is not the ugly person they hoped for...

I actually think the girl in the photo is quite pretty...

It seems like ugliness has been turned into an affliction that one can do nothing about it; I see it more as the person has limited resources. A person can look beautiful with the right attitude, demeanor...and, in accepting that people may call me shallow, the right style. All it takes is learning to work with what you already have.

Why not? There are sites for single parents, over 50, widow and widower, homosexual, transgender, big people, why not this. It might just give them some more self confidence.
  • Gir Pissed ... 2010/10/31 02:12:23
A site blatantly calling them ugly builds self-confidence?

They consider themselves ugly or they would not be joining the site, maybe being around people with the same insecurities would help make them feel more secure in a relationship and thus help build their self confidence.

  • FoxFairy 2010/10/31 01:23:28
It's a interesting idea, but I checked it out and it's just another scam dating site that doesn't actually let free members contact anyone. I would not say the members are ugly through just realistic...average looking people who want tens are dillusional.

People that 'think' they're ugly and need to tag themselves as such already have a pretty low self esteem. Why do we need websites to judge someone's outward appearance and knock their self esteem down even more? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Really . . . ugly, pretty, ok? Who's doing the judging? How ugly/pretty/ok is he/she?

I don't really care for this type of stuff.........

A woman named Janet Tyler is in the hospital with her face covered in bandages. Apparently she is hideous looking and she has undergone an experimental treatment to make her look "normal."

"Eye of the Beholder" is one of the more popular episodes of "The Twilight Zone" and for good reason. It has a very clever and well written storyline, it is well acted and it certainly keeps the viewers' attention held up until the end. The revelation of what Janet Tyler, as well as the rest of the "normal looking" hospital staff looks like is a terrific climax to this episode. The dialouge between the characters and their reaction to people who don't conform to the majority is also a good reflection on life and culture then and now. Great episode.

wow what a fantastic episode! i don't consider myself someone who gets scared or creeped out easily, but i was truly disturbed by this episode. and the messege it sends is great. what may be beautiful to some isn't necessarily beautiful to others.

It's not like they're actually calling people ugly. It's up to the user to join. If some hottie wants to join, all the better for people who think they're ugly.
