Is trouble brewing when a man marries a woman who already had a son from a previous marriage, but in any conversation, he refers to the boy as his stepson?

It is not what you are called it is how you interact with the step parent. If there are positive nurturing and caring aspects taking place that is the real measure of parenting.

Would you prefer that he refer to the boy as his wife?

Hes not the biological dad, so he's being accurate, kids will tell you in a heartbeat that you're not their REAL Dad when they are mad, so why front?

I guess it would depend on the age and circumstance of the biological father's departure. If the boy was a baby and only knew the stepdad as his father, then it might be hurtful to hear the man he knows as Dad calling him "step-son", but if he's older he should understand that the term is accurate and doesn't necessarily mean anything negative. To each his own I suppose.

It might depend on the relationship the boy has with one, the step-dad and two, his biological dad. If he's close to his real dad, I don't think he'd appreciate his step-father calling himself the boy's dad. But if he doesn't know - or doesn't want to know - his biological father it's more likely he would be fine being called the guy's son.
