Is There Too Much Spam in Social Media?

Social networking used to be great technology that provided a way to connect with old friends, make new connections, and preserve memories. Then came spam and corporate involvement. The first big North American social network was MySpace, which introduced the concept of "adding friends." (something the largely-forgotten Friendster also popularized internationally.)

As Facebook became more popular and personable, MySpace lost a ton of users, but it wasn't just because of its interface. It was spam--tons and tons of spam--seemingly overtaking users' pages. MySpace was heavily criticized for its lack of spam defense and the social network has never recovered. Now current social networking giants Facebook and Twitter have a spam problem--and it's at the sites' control.

Corporations are purchasing ads, promoting tweets, with many people even buying Twitter followers to raise their stature. Privacy settings at times are rendered useless as you more than have to be careful what you "Like," or else it may show up in an ad. With Facebook buying out Instagram and becoming publicly traded, it remains a mystery just how private your information really is.

Keep in mind, Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks are still a great way to connect with friends and family, develop relationships, and even follow the latest news and trends from around the world in practically real time. And, at least for now, there are alternative social networks out there not as cluttered with spam or corporate ads, such as Pinterest and StumbleUpon.

Recently, entrepreneur Dalton Caldwell launched App.net, which allows you to social network without spam and corporate interference--for a fee of $50 to sign up. Something tells us not too many disgruntled social networkers will be lining up for that just yet . . .

Smaller social media sites have very few ads, just enough to pay for keeping the website online. Bigger sites like Facebook actually spend money to find out how to get more money from their users. They don't break even, they make money.

    Especially of the OFFENSIVE KIND
(NO ONE needs to have that Sexual Junk spammed as much as it is spammed .. )
and then there's the SCAMMERS ..

Now instead of shredders (to physically shred the junk mail in the mailbox)
time is spent instead identifying spam in the e-mail box .. and trying to keep up to date with new security to keep spam at bay ..

But on a MAC with spam blockers there is, almost, none to none.

I did not know how much there was, or that some pages had any until I used my friends clone. A Dell, I think.

Speaking from experience, I have been Spammed soo much. I have people who I don't know add me. And people know my real name. (I don't have my real name on Facebook) and I don't know them personally. If thats not spam then I don't know what is.

Hate commercialism. Went to the beach in Long Beach and still couldn't escape it as the skies were full of charter planes dragging commercials behind them. Sheesh. Last thing I was thinking about was life insurance and blocked the sun.

Of course. Social media is the gold rush of the century, and everybody thinks they are a prospector.

Unfortunately because the internet is now a sea of adverts they all ripple together and no longer serve the purpose of connecting the right customer to the right product.

I hate watching a music video on YouTube and this is what I see:

Idiot: "I know this will piss some people off, but here goes. I'm an upcoming rapper called [insert crappy rap name] and I make raps. Check out my channel!"

Me: "You're right; this did piss me off"

Recently deactivited my Facebook account because of the spam and such. Hardly use Twitter. Never used MySpace.
Another good concept destroyed by greed and profiteering.

I see more spam on youtube than facebook. But any spam is too much. The adds, I can handle because they are what pay for the website, but some adds are just annoying or obvious scams and the content is annoying, not the existence.

It's hard to tell sometimes what information is fabricated and what's real, especially when you read online reviews.
