We recently told you about a female graduate student who went 18 months without shaving her armpit hair -- and boy, did you have something to say about it! One SodaHead wrote: "It just looks ugly, and I remember the last time it was discussed during the hippie era. Doesn't matter with friends, but for dating it's a total turnoff."

Some of your comments got us thinking: Is there more pressure on women to have good hygiene than there is on men? And where does that pressure come from? Emer O'Toole of Dublin, the woman who stopped shaving her armpit and leg hair, said guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by them.

Plenty of guys stop shaving the moment they finish the work week, and it's considered perfectly acceptable. Whereas if a woman has a little peach fuzz on her legs or under her arms ... pandemonium! Women are expected to look primped and smell sweet on a daily basis, but some guys don't even wash their jeans -- ever! What do you think? Is there more pressure on women than men to have good hygiene?

Hell yeah! Look at the news yesterday....Hilliary Clinton photo came out...it made the news because she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not done.....could you imagine if they did this to a man?!!!! So not fair!!! Everything a woman does is based on her looks and that is not right!!!! Yet the ugliest men in the world if they have money they are studs!!! Give us women a break this is BS and men know it!

Well, I never did my hands and legs till I was twenty and only because I had a mishap with a pumice stone which pulled my hair off.... Now I get them done more as a habit as it felt good. Its more individual perception of how you maintain yourself. A woman can go around smelling like a salt fish because refuses to bathe for all I care... Not insulting but being honest that its a matter of individual dignity and image.

I have always been scrupulous about myself and my hygiene and my hair. I love makeup and beautiful clothes. So do my daughters, my sister and my girlfriends. But, you know what, it is damned expensive!

Yes, but there's too much pressure on both. Or at least, showering once (or more) a day isn't good for your skin and is a waste of water.

I don't know about the rest of the men here but I like a woman to look and smell nice, I get to work around men all day long and when I leave the job and have a date the last thing I want is for her to smell and look unkempted. I don't care about make up but good hygiene is a must

yes, but guys should keep themselves clean too, i know i do! i try to shower everyday of every two days. and wear clean clothes.

i don't know why but the media tries to put makeup in the hygene section, when its not, makeup imo makes girls look uglier then when they keep theire faces like God made them!

Women have always looked after themselves better than men but now men are catching on to. There seems to be a helluva lot of advertising that promotes female hygiene these days, I'm not sure why that's happening,maybe the market is more receptive on the female side.

Ive gone days without having a shower because i just didnt have enough time to, girls out with me on these sessions couldnt go 10 minutes without checking there make-up and dissapearing ever few hours to change there clothes and wash themselves.

Most blokes might wear the same suit for days straight (with the odd change of underwear) when on a session. I have gone home some days after a good night and seen my reflection, just never on my mind when im out.

Dont know one woman I could say the same thing for..

But it comes from other women. As Daniel Tosh pointed out: girls love to be judged. And save me the 'society demands it' crap. Girls like to start wearing jewelry and putting make-up on and doing hair when they're 3 years old. And you never see girls that are naturally very attractive, like the one in the picture above, that don't groom themselves incessantly. If all you're bringing to the table is looks you better keep them in tip-top shape.

It is just more of the old double standard....personally I like to be clean and smell good, and so does my husband....but lots of guys just don't seem to care....and I, personally,
find beards and mustaches of any kind to be a big turn off for lots of reasons, but
hygenically they are disgusting....

Yes in the general sense, but women tend to naturally focus on their hygiene to a greater degree than men. It takes more prodding and teaching for young men to "clean up" and keep it up on their own than it is for young women. I personally think it's an endearing quality in women.

Yes. We are taught young that hygiene on girls is key. And that ladies keep things clean; clean hair, shaved under arms. Just neat and if we don't keep that standard we are labeled everything under the sun from funky chick, hippy, dirty.

Losing your hair isn't hygienic. There's the same pressure for everyone to be hygienic. Women put pressure on each other to wear make-up, and fake tan, and shave, and do this, and do that. It's not being hygienic, though. In fact, it's probably LESS hygienic, but whatever :P
