Is There More Pressure on Women to Have Good Hygiene?

We recently told you about a female graduate student who went 18 months without shaving her armpit hair -- and boy, did you have something to say about it! One SodaHead wrote: "It just looks ugly, and I remember the last time it was discussed during the hippie era. Doesn't matter with friends, but for dating it's a total turnoff."

shaving

Some of your comments got us thinking: Is there more pressure on women to have good hygiene than there is on men? And where does that pressure come from? Emer O'Toole of Dublin, the woman who stopped shaving her armpit and leg hair, said guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by them.

Plenty of guys stop shaving the moment they finish the work week, and it's considered perfectly acceptable. Whereas if a woman has a little peach fuzz on her legs or under her arms ... pandemonium! Women are expected to look primped and smell sweet on a daily basis, but some guys don't even wash their jeans -- ever! What do you think? Is there more pressure on women than men to have good hygiene?

Hell yeah! Look at the news yesterday....Hilliary Clinton photo came out...it made the news because she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not done.....could you imagine if they did this to a man?!!!! So not fair!!! Everything a woman does is based on her looks and that is not right!!!! Yet the ugliest men in the world if they have money they are studs!!! Give us women a break this is BS and men know it!

I think so. It is a personal choice for a woman not to shave -- but I choose to. That's not so much a matter of hygiene, but being clean is hygiene. It grosses me out to be around anyone with body odor -- I won't be there for long.

Woman keeps good hygiene for many reasons mostly if she does not keep her Female parts clean then she is prone to infections and getting sick

If you wash yourself with soap you have no body odor. Hair does not cause body odor.

And think about it...we've (girls) have been taught at a young age that looks and beauty is the only way to get anything in life. Look at Cinderella...she looks beautiful with makeup, her hair done, and the best dress ever and she gets the guy, but when she was in her other clothes, no makeup, and only brushed and washed her hair...no guy would dream of being with her.

To me it's terrible because if women loved themselves in the first place people ruin their decision like that saying "you should be skinnier than you are now!" to me that's not fair because sod women like how they are born. =)

Everyone is pressured to have good hygiene. It's ok to be a little dirty to improve your immune system, it's just like muscle, if you work it out it gets stronger. All the extras like shaving your body, make-up, etc women do to themselves.

It is yes for commercial life styles for other countries but scientifically not among US women as they already shown their love is much stronger than death because American women aware of uncertain infective colonization on their body when fog comes American Haunches...simple Hygine moving ....at last outcome of beauty acceptable...

No, I think women have always been expected to hold themselves to higher hygienic standards than their male counterparts. Guys are expected to get dirty and do the gross jobs.

Why would either sex have to be pressured to keep clean? They should keep themselves up period. As far as women shaving their armpits, what woman would want to look like you have buckwheat or carrot top in a headlock? buckwheat carrot top

Men get to look just about however they want, and that includes smelling like a fish rotting inside a sweaty gym sock broiling in the sun.

Women are expected to be thin, huge boobs, perfectly coiffed at all times, made up faces, hairless except on the head, firm, bright skin, straight white teeth, dainty fingers topped with long nails, smoky eyes with full thick lashes. They are expected to be perfect...but who makes this rule? The lengths that women go to trying to fulfill a symbol that they are not completely aware rules them are scary at times...but men seem to wonder why they bother. I think that women put these pressures on themselves and others of their gender and claim (subtly, of course) that men will like them better if they torture themselves. I can not name a guy that wants to be saddled with the high maintenance chick who is completely absorbed with how they look, when they could have a regular girl that is still hot as hell, but normal looking.
