We recently told you about a female graduate student who went 18 months without shaving her armpit hair -- and boy, did you have something to say about it! One SodaHead wrote: "It just looks ugly, and I remember the last time it was discussed during the hippie era. Doesn't matter with friends, but for dating it's a total turnoff."

Some of your comments got us thinking: Is there more pressure on women to have good hygiene than there is on men? And where does that pressure come from? Emer O'Toole of Dublin, the woman who stopped shaving her armpit and leg hair, said guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by them.

Plenty of guys stop shaving the moment they finish the work week, and it's considered perfectly acceptable. Whereas if a woman has a little peach fuzz on her legs or under her arms ... pandemonium! Women are expected to look primped and smell sweet on a daily basis, but some guys don't even wash their jeans -- ever! What do you think? Is there more pressure on women than men to have good hygiene?

Hell yeah! Look at the news yesterday....Hilliary Clinton photo came out...it made the news because she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not done.....could you imagine if they did this to a man?!!!! So not fair!!! Everything a woman does is based on her looks and that is not right!!!! Yet the ugliest men in the world if they have money they are studs!!! Give us women a break this is BS and men know it!

Yes

Women definately have more pressure to have good hygiene than men. for instance if a woman does not shower after playing sports, people will turn away from her and say she stinks, if it's a man, it is considered the man stink. if a woman does not take care of her self, she is judged. I didn't like a stinky man; smell of a man is not smelling like a goat.
In my opinion, a man doesn't need to be perfumed, only a get a careful shower, brush the teeth, short nails, it may be enough. A bad smell only says that man has no respect for the other persons around.

while yes, a girl has more pressure on hygiene, they make up for it by having the ability to dress how they want without people looking at them like they are some scray horror movie.
a guy cant do that but they make up for it by not having as much pressure on hygiene
gender equality is weird like that.

Yes

None of us mind having good hygene, but girls are under a ton of pressure to make sure that we always look nice. When a guy walks out in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, it's sexy. When a girl does it, she's frumpy. Just goes back to gender privilege. Men are more privileged than women are, especially in this arena.

Women think that their looks depend on what guys they get. If a woman is unkempt then society will automatically judge her. As a girl, I'm self-conscious. So what if a woman doesnt plaster herself with make-up. Society wouldn't do this to a man. I think this is totally unfair to women.

If a girl doesn't wear make up or shaves or "takes care of herself"; people think "OMGZZZ!!!! SO gross and uglaaayyyyy!!11" Yet, no one says the same thing to an "ugly or unkempt" man.

We guys are easy, you girls only have to show up. We dont inspect you before.
90% of your activities to go out are vannity based, not hygiene based.
You are battling the scorn of your female observers, not the male ones.
You ladies have imposed this fads on yourselves.
You are so covered with synthetics (All of them cancer causing agents) that the real scent of a woman was last felt in the 1960's. Women's lib won but femeneity was lost.
If you have unsightly hair, get your progesterone check and fix it.. Baby hair is normal in female skin, why shave it? Because your girlfriends said so, not us.
Besides, you have more and bigger cavities than we guys do, hence more hygiene needed.

Absolutely! If a man is a bit disheveled and smells a bit of BO, he can dismiss it as "been working!" Can a woman do the same? A man can pass gas and most people laugh it off. What happens if a woman does the same? Double standard, definately!

For a woman there is so many things we have to do to 'take care of ourselves' shaving, waxing, etc.
I remember this one girl in 7th grade getting picked on just because she had a little leg stubble, it's bloody annoying!

Not wearing makeup and hair undone are not Hygiene Issues. Dirty hair would be. We need to distinguish between Appearance and Hygiene.

Way more. a man can walk into a grocery store just after work and look filthy but not a woman. why that is I really don't know Were just expected to be clean and pleasant looking all the time. Ridicules!!! the way some men look is just awful. We can't get away with it without being called a mess or a pig.....
