Is There More Pressure on Women to Have Good Hygiene?

We recently told you about a female graduate student who went 18 months without shaving her armpit hair -- and boy, did you have something to say about it! One SodaHead wrote: "It just looks ugly, and I remember the last time it was discussed during the hippie era. Doesn't matter with friends, but for dating it's a total turnoff."

shaving

Some of your comments got us thinking: Is there more pressure on women to have good hygiene than there is on men? And where does that pressure come from? Emer O'Toole of Dublin, the woman who stopped shaving her armpit and leg hair, said guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by them.

Plenty of guys stop shaving the moment they finish the work week, and it's considered perfectly acceptable. Whereas if a woman has a little peach fuzz on her legs or under her arms ... pandemonium! Women are expected to look primped and smell sweet on a daily basis, but some guys don't even wash their jeans -- ever! What do you think? Is there more pressure on women than men to have good hygiene?

Hell yeah! Look at the news yesterday....Hilliary Clinton photo came out...it made the news because she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not done.....could you imagine if they did this to a man?!!!! So not fair!!! Everything a woman does is based on her looks and that is not right!!!! Yet the ugliest men in the world if they have money they are studs!!! Give us women a break this is BS and men know it!

This woman is great example of poor hygiene. Just look at her perfectly shaped ass...that's disgusting! She really has let herself go. Geez Louise...

That's a loaded question. Shaving is a matter of grooming/appearance, not hygiene.

Yes yes yes! It's a huge double-standard and I'm at least thankful for my dad putting as much emphasis on my brothers to keep clean as he did me growing up. :)

    Good hygiene is for everybody!

Women tend to have bodily odors that are more offensive to others than men do. W/o proper hygeine they can start to smell rather fishy to use the kindest metaphor possible.Plus men in the U.S. aren't accustomed to seeing hairy armpits or legs on a woman, it goes back to the 60's and the hippy movement where women let themselves go and became trashy.

Women? Yeah, as if men didn't stop shaving and cutting their hair and washing during the hippy movement too...

lol, so sick of hearing this cliche of women and a "fishy" smell.. as if a man's sweaty balls doesn't have any kind of odor to it. Scumbags who don't shower and keep themselves clean smell. The end.

Yep. However, women are more prone to healthy issues associated with poor hygiene than men. There's a small opening just below a woman's torso. Not the anus but the one in front of it. I believe it is called the "vagina"...It is warm, moist, and attracts dirty men. In addition to dirty men, it attracts harmful bacteria. If any of this bacteria makes its way inside a woman's body bad things happen. These dirty bacteria are so nasty they require serious medical attention or they can kill women.

It's definitely a double standard, that's for sure. But I think that pressure comes from other women. We're always seemingly in competition with each other, it's ridiculous.

Sad, but true. It really needs to stop because people who may not be model looking, many times can do the jobs much better and consistentey

HELL NO I dont want a stinky man. He can have some hair under his arms but not a lot. a little hair on his legs/chest is no big deal.

I wish there was pressure on men to have good hygiene, I can't stand armpit hair on men or women. Can't stand it when people are stinky neither.

Yes. It's true. Men can get away with things like not shaving for a couple of days. If a woman is caught with leg stubble, she will get comments and dirty looks.

But I'm not going to pretend I'm also not turned off by men who smell or any other hygiene issue. I mean, if I'm in a public place and notice one woman on the side of me with leg hair and a guy who is just a mess and needs to shave and do something with his hair.. I can't really say one is worse than the other.

Well put...Men can get away with this. However, if men didn't these things, most women would question his sexuality. I know what you're going to say...

Females are much more insecure and obsessed with getting attention than men are. They heap needless pressure upon themselves (and each other). Men do what's necessary for social interaction, but women overdo it -- usually in order to hide their true selves at all costs.

Even though both sexes should take personal hygiene seriously, a man will still get away with a few stubs of hair on his chin or armpit. It's natural to ask for more from a lady. We don't call them the fairer sex for nothing.

Women are so body conscious anyway when they get ripe or miss a waxing it is real noticable.

Everyone should take hygiene into consideration; however, we have to smell our best, look our best, be groomed from head to toe, eyebrows waxed, legs, underarms, and other regions shaved...there is so much more expected of women in this department than of men.

Though I don't consider not shaving to be "poor hygiene". If guys walk around with bed head, in their sweatshirts and pjs, it's ok, but if women do it, they are considered slobs. There's definitely a double standard.
