Is the word, "Queer," still derogatory or has the terminology evolved into something more positive? For instance, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?"

It's only recently that queer evolved into a term referring to gays; queer used to simply mean strange--for example "what a queer expression you have on your face".

I still say queer for strange or odd and have been saying since 1965 and I am not going to change now..why should I...others took this word and then applied it to others/themselves so that is not my problem. I use to say.. we had such a gay time but that got taken and changed to.They took my happy, glad, cheerful word and it got moved down in the dictionary. I am sick of people stealing words and symbols and them giving them some other meaning..a rainbow is a damn rainbow not some gay symbol on my car. I love Care Bears they love rainbows....LOL

some people actually use Queer to identify themselves as it is now used as an umbrella term encompassing all the individuals that society deems unusual. the community's taking back the word that was used/is used to hurt them, which in turn empowers them to be whoever they want to be. instead of saying oh, i'm a blahblah blah blah with blah blah tendencies who sometimes blah blah, you could just say "i'm queer" and leave it at that.

I think it is very sad when derogatory phrases areI made "ok" by the very people that are used to degrade. Having said that, if those of the homosexual persuasion find it acceptable there is little that can be done. I guess I should have chosen "undecided"

Whenever I hear the word queer I think of its original meaning. To me it has nothing to do with gay people. -_-

Technically, queer simply means that something is strange or something that thwarts or ruins.

I think the answer says it all. If it's in good taste it's fine. If the person is trying to be rude with it, it's not. Like Me and my friends call each other whores, we say it out of love, but if someone were to say it out of hate, then it's not okay.

The gay community is beginning to own this word now and has changed something negative into a more positive, light hearted word. Another word that this happened to as well would be Queen

Queer and Gay are equivalents now .
Saying something is Gay or That is so gay carries all the same connotation as queer .

According to my son who goes to a very liberal university (aren't they all nowadays?) queer has actually been added to the list with gay/bi/lesbian/tranny/buttsni... deathwish.

<----- Proud Queer Transsexual Trial Attorney. We have claimed that word as our own, i.e., "Queer Studies" at the university, the queer community in Chicago, etc.

I think it's "hate speech" if a straight person says it. Probably the work of straight Liberals who feel guilty, imposing another taboo on everyone else.

I'm bisexual, and I refuse to use the word queer, just like I refuse to use the N word. It will always be negative, no matter how you use it.

I think it's turning to the gay version of the "N" word. I think it's still derogatory but over time I assume people will become more desensitized to the word.
What matters more is the context in which they are used.
