To put it unkindly, the average child becomes dumber and fatter during the vacation. And although there’s no need to declare war on summer, there’s plenty we could do to combat the seasonal learning loss and weight gain. Do you think summertime is unhealthy for kids?

Sitting inside all day in front of a TV is bad for kids. Kick them outside and give them a ball.

My nephew is still mad at me because I made him stay outside and play last weekend instead of sitting in front of the TV.

No, because there are ways to protect you from the sun. And there's also much more time for the kids to get out and get active. And parents can keep better track of what their kids are eating and drinking, because they're home more. Summer can be more of a benefit for children, IMO.

We need to keep our kids locked up in hyperbaric chambers so we can control every element of their lives....in the name of safety.

I'M ALWAYS DUMB WHEN SUMMER IS HERE. When school starts is when I get my smarts back.

Of course it is. In fact, we should ban it. I'M NOT SURE HOW BUT WE SHOULD BAN IT.

its better than school actually if you think about it

school: your in a confined space, sitting still, wasting paper, and driving adults to the point where they need a mental institute, sure your learning math, reading, and science which may help you iin the future... but your overusing your brain to the point it can fry itself and school doesnt teach you what Summer teaches you.

Summer: you can go outside, run around, doing stuff creative with your life, and driving adults to the point where they need a mental institute, while granted, you dont learn too much math, reading, or science (unless you like doing that in your free time) but you learn more of lifes lessons that school could never teach you.

If parents would encourage their kids to get the hell out of the house more often, there wouldn't be any need for this question.

summer is when kids get exercise, go outside and have adventures! Not unhealthy in the slightest (as long as you count in sunblock)

... but i do think that America needs to abolish summer vacation in schools. We are no longer a society that needs the children available for summer harvest and the rest of the world is kicking our ass academically.

one system i like is Ghana schools have three month-long breaks interspersed throughout the year, so kids can take a break and reboot; i do agree, though, the purpose for summer being vacation time is far outdated

I have two sons and they exercise more during the summer during the year and they read more b/c they have less b.s. work that made for the average. They waste so much time during the year doing work that is way too easy for them. So, in my opinion, the summer is better for them.

It can be bad if parents do not provide enough activities. Also, parents can tell their teenagers to get a job or disconnect their electronics for a few hours.

Being born is unhealthy not only for children but for all of us. Seems like everything
Is bad for us. Eating Bacon shortens your life by a year if eaten twice a week, I should have died 60ty years before I was born.

It can be. My parents had me in year-round school. We still had vacation breaks but they weren't long. Some students benefit from a couple of months off, but some also need the constant learning stimulation. And weight gain? I would think more children would be attending camps, swimming, trampoline jumping, spending time with friends, vacationing, ect...Well, I guess if you have lazy parents who only muster up enough energy to boot the kids off to school, then I can see where the weight gain comes from.

...absolutely, lets ban it and keep our kids indoors (preferably in a state run public school where we can further keep them away from faith and further cram indoctrination down their throats).

Grace to you, Glory to God!

does it make you feel important undermining people's comments. However, i will respond to your comment. it could be possible that these so called organic mothers spread the rumour to keep their children under control and make them do more wacky things. Trust me, my best friends mother was an organic mum

I believe that answer all depends on your living situation. I really don't think it is safe for kids to go and play like I did when I grew up. the kids I see out playing, as young as 4, have no parental supervision. Not a good idea. Why is it that play costs money in order to have have canned fun? Play at an amusement that includes high fat and high sugar. the kids learn what-ever from TV not the parents sitting down and reading to them. End my rant, thank you.

I never had learning loss over the summer...I guess today's public school system just sucks so badly that kids are losing what they "learn" over the course of a few months? And only a lazy kid could gain weight in the summer and if they're lazy in the summer, I'm sure they're even lazier in the other months.

Kids should be out and playing, possibly going to camp and playing in a pool, but definitely playing. Of course, with the heat in the past month, I can't blame them for staying inside, not that that really stopped me when I was young. Too much technology to preoccupy them.

I've dropped seven pounds since the start of summer.
If we don't retain what we've learned in school during the summer, then that just shows its usefulness.

When I was a kid I ran around, swam and did summer sports all through summer. It was more common for me to lose weight in the summer, than gain it.
