Is Smashing Things a Good Way To Relieve Stress? (Clients of the Anger Room Sure Think So)

You!

Have you ever had such a bad day that you just wanted to break something? Or maybe throw a piece of furniture across the room? Well, now a Texas entrepreneur has devised a socially acceptable way for you to spew your rage.

The Anger Room is the brainchild of Donna Alexander, who first launched the business out of her garage. Friends seeking to relieve stress would come over and take baseball bats to old junk in the room. When word got out about what they were doing, strangers began to show up and demand became too much to handle. That’s when Alexander decided to turn the Anger Room into a legitimate business.

Now when clients come to the Anger Room’s new location in a Dallas strip mall, they are decked out in safety goggles and helmets to protect themselves. They then enter a room filled with old furniture and electronics, arranged to look like an office, bedroom, or kitchen. Once inside, anything is fair game. You can smash, break, throw, and destroy to your heart’s content.

If you want, you can also take out relationship stress on mannequins. Alexander told a Dallas TV station that some customers “put pictures on them, write on them, and then they try to beat the crap out of them.”

Anger Room sessions are available in three time options: “I need a Break!”—$25 for 5 minutes; “Lash Out”—$45 for 15 minutes; and “Total Demolition”—$75 for 25 minutes. The rates are pretty affordable considering you don’t have to collect the items or do any of the setup and cleanup.

So what do you think SodaHeads? Is smashing things a good way to relieve stress?

Under controlled circumstances it can work occasionally. But it may be dangerous to set up an anger room.

I guess it's better than taking it out on the people around you, but wouldn't it be better to conquer the anger & learn how to handle stress in a mature manner?

Apparently it is, because people are finding all sorts of ways to destroy things when they're mad. Out in the woods where I ride my horses, someone has set up an entire shooting gallery made up of TV's, computer monitors and old laptops. They're all shot to hell. I put a couple caps into a big screen TV that was out there, and I have to admit it gave me a good laugh. My horse didn't mind, either. He's used to me target shooting while we're riding.

I go out into the woods & shoot things as a means of target practice, NOT to take out my aggression on objects. Did you ever ask anyone why they had the "shooting gallery"? Why presume it was because they were angry?

LOL, I Don't know why or who put it there. Judging from the relative newness of some of the machines and TV's it really seems that their insubordination may have earned their place at the high tech range.

I don't break things, but I do use a stress ball and enjoy physical workouts to blow off steam. When I was a teen, I did throw things, but that time is gone, and thank goodness.

OMG YES! I have zombie games and a punching bag at home if I get the strong erge to want to kill something when I get really mad, frustrated, and stressed out. They always make me feel better after a very short period of time. But it there is stuff that's useless and can be broken no problem then I will take advantage of it.
  • JAA volley15 2012/05/13 23:45:33

Why not try a more mature and adult way to handle your anger? Wanting to "kill something" is not healthy for you or those around you.

You try dealing with stupid people all day. Seriously how many times do I have to explain to people what "Hours of operation" mean and that calling 20 minutes AFTER the store closes (and we are doing our cleaning and closing paper work) that they can NOT place an order? SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? UGH. How hard is it for people to understand that we are CLOSED?

And when I get cursed out from some moron customer who can't understand the simplest thing or that they placed an online order and they themselves did not enter a credit card but set it as cash and it was not MY fault it's not in as a credit card payment but their own...... The general public makes me angry. Common sense is not common anymore and dealing with the general public on a daily basis makes me a.) fear for the sake of humanity, b.) want to smash my head in from the insane amounts of stupidity people display, and/or c.) want to kill/destroy something.

Then add in not having enough competent staff members, drivers who throw a temper tantrum like a two year old when they do not get the big orders and curse you out cause they weren't lucky enough to be in the store AND clocked back in from being on a delivery at EXACTLY the right moment.... -_______________- SQUID OF ANGER!!!!!***

***If you get the reference I will love you ...

Taking my anger out on VIRTUAL PIXELS is FAR healthier than not being able to control it enough to get home and ACTUALLY killing/maming a live person. It's a stress relief and everyone needs one. It's just what works for me.

    I am working on getting a better job. The amount of stress at my work is not worth the low pay. And as soon as I can get back out on my own and out of my parents house again that will greatly help. Everything here is a mess; mentally, physically, emotionally.... D;

I don't have a lot of the same outlets I did growing up, namely sports, so I have to find others. Wailing on a punching back is also a good workout so it works in more than one way. And playing some of the video game and slaughtering countless zombies (the virtual pixels mentioned earlier) is also a nice distraction from the real world for a short period of time. Most of the time when I get home from work everyone else is in bed so I can't really blast music AND sing along to it.

I'm thinking of starting a youtube vlog for a creative outlet which I am also lacking. Which will also let me rant a bit and talk it out which I don't get the opportunity to do very often. Hmm. I need to learn how to edit video. It doesn't help that I'm technology challenged sometimes. Although I have found that threatening my laptop with a short flight out of the second story window will get it to work with me. o.o Funny how that actually works. Technology has a life of it's own a swear. (and apparently it values its own life too. Kinda creepy if you ask me.)

    ***edited for a grotesques misspelling

Yes it makes you feel better but the down side to that is if you get use to releasing anger that way and something comes up to make you angry you may hurt someone or damage property either way you go to jail. It isn't like you can always run off to the "anger room" where they let you destroy stuff when you are upset.

Take a pain in ass old laptop,
    Add an outdoor gun range,
Lay hands upon a full auto M-16 or similar (I used an M-16)
Everything will be good, all will be right with the world.
Well almost everything, but it will be so much fun,..
