It is impossible to earn respect. Those who say it is are just trying to sound more sensitive. It is either given, or not, think about it. A big person could run a marathon, but how many people are just going to laugh at that person for trying. A child could paint a masterpiece, but most are just going to turn their attention elsewhere. A transient could hold a door open, but will mostly get dirty looks. Respect is given, impossible to earn, and undoubtedly over-stated everywhere. Respect, like anything true, is shown through actions, and most, not all, but most people don't show it.

Age, position, sex, and other qualities of being are meaningless. Only words and actions will earn you my respect, and I've gotten into plenty of trouble because of it.

It shows your raising. When you meet a stranger there is nothing wrong with being respectful, being polite. I think people are much more receptive to someone who has manners and acts like it than someone who acts like a thug with a chip on their shoulder.

a certain level of respect should be automaticaly given to a person till they prove unworthy of it, but not 2 much, shouldnt realy respect sum1 till they earn it.

I think it is a little bit of both. You can earn more a lose it depending on your words and actions. but I think that each person should have at least a tiny bit.

I think it depends on the level of respect you are talking about. I think nearly everyone deserves a certain level of respect just for being a human being. It's a dynamic concept not static.

Well, it depends on what is meant by respect. Respect, in the truer sense of the word, meaning high esteem and admiration should certainly be earned. However, I’ve noticed that the term respect is also used to refer to something along the lines of common courtesy. In that case, I believe that respect should automatically be given until someone proves that they don’t deserve it. You can’t approach someone from a level of disrespect and expect them to automatically give you the courtesy it takes to earn your respect. In that case, you’re the one proving yourself unworthy of respect, not them.

Crud, I meant to say respect is earned. I don't think age or authority demand respect. If you aren't a respectable, ethical person, no amount of age, power, money or authority is going to change that.

If the 'other' person becomes dishonest or manipulative, the person should be treated with the contempt they deserve.

Disrespect is something that can be earned. I treat everyone I just meet with respect, but if they don't show it back then they don't deserve any themselves.
