Is red hair a genetic defect?

frere 2009/08/13 04:24:31
I have red hair and I'm curious. Am I still human? :)

Anyway, does anyone know what caused red hair in the first place?

Yes it is a genetic defect. It is a failure of the protein MC1R to convert red pigment to brown pigment. This causes a build up of red pigment which in turn makes red hair.

basically red hair is a recessive gene. if someone had red hair generations before one of your parents, that parent would still carry the gene, even if they're not a redhead. the only way a person has a chance of getting red hair is if both parents carry the gene (and obviously have sex)... even if you don't get red hair, u wld still carry the gene. i wld know, i have red hair. and yes we're still human lol, we just have the rarest natural hair colour known to humankind; only 1-2% of us have it (:

Its completely normal to have red hair... get preoccupied when your hair turns green or fluorescent blue

No. It is simply and inherited genetic trait.
