Is psychopathy a type of mental illness?

I've been reading The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson(Very interesting; I highly recommend it). It's about a journalist who meets a man who supposedly fakes madness to get out of a prison sentence and decides to research more about pyschopathy and the psychologist world. While it talked alot about psychopathy and mental ilness I've never really understood the difference(if there is one). Mind helping me out?
