Is Marijuana a Gateway Drug, or is this just propagandist phrase used to induce fear without fact?

Marijuana is a Gateway Drug
Research proves Marijuana is not a gateway drug
“Marijuana as a Gateway Drug” is this just propagandist phrase used to induce fear without fact
Nicotine is extraordinarily addictive and is a true Gateway drug
Alcohol is the gateway drug that increases people confidence and lowers their reasoning skills make it more likely to accept their first recreational drugs, leading to long term repeated use
Gateway Theory states that Marijuana if smoked all day, everyday, without being "addicted", and that thinking spills over and helps one rationalize using "harder drugs", first a little, then a little more, then... You are physically hooked
The DEA alleges that experimenting with marijuana leads to the use of harder drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamin without facts backing them up
In fact, most drug users begin with alcohol and nicotine before marijuana -- usually before they are of legal age.
An emerging theory that states the likelihood that someone will transition to the use of illegal drugs is determined not by the preceding use of a particular drug but instead by the user’s individual tendencies and environmental circumstances.

Depends on the person. The majority of people that I know, who smoke pot, and have for a long time, never tried hard drugs. It's for recreational use, like drinking beer or wine. Not all drinkers are alcoholics, not all smokers go further.. It really depends on the people.

The USA is still NOT getting that kind of reputation though. It needs to be on the 6 O'clock News a lot more. The REASON that people break the Law here in the United States is because the USA has a Reputation for NOT Enforcing Her Laws!!!! Eric Holder probably needs to find out what Burma, China, and Iran is doing, and do that; and stop teaming up with BH Obama, El Presidente Caldreon, and the Mexicans operating on both sides of the Border. The only reason that he does that is because he knows that he can get away with it. After all, he is Attorney General of a Country that DOES NOT ENFORCE ITS LAWS!!!

Marijuana usage simply does not lead to harder drug usage. Regardless, none of the illegal drugs has had the impact on our society that both nicotine and alcohol has had.

Personally, I think all substances should be legal. We live in a free society. Adults should be free to engage in any act they desire so long as it does not unduly infringe upon the rights and freedoms of others.

I didn't read far enough down to get to my answer choice. Alcohol is the gateway drug. In LA the gatway drug (if you are willing to call it that) pot is a schedule 1 and coke is schedule 2. How do you do a gateway drug to a LESS dangerous drug? That always made me laugh.

Beer is far more dangerous than weed. Do the research. That is a fact.
My honest idea as to who pot is still illegal is twofold. One is there is not a test to say you are under the influence RIGHT NOW. Only that you do or do not smoke. No way for employers to protect themselves from workplace accidents. Second is the alcohol lobby. They don't want weed legalized AT ALL!!! Would hurt their sales.

I agree with everything you just said but would like to add....the Pharmacutical Company's don't want it legalized, especially....the are making a killing off Rx. drugs and they want you addicted...they only want legal what they can profit greatly from....they can not profit or control a natural plant but they will surely try....

I am NOT making light of your expirience. Coke is a bitch!! But if pot was sold at the beer store and NOT by a drug dealer that would stop many people from being exposed coke.

Marijuana did not lead you to a serious addiction with cocaine, the fact that you got it from an illegal source is what led you to a serious addiction with cocaine! What drugs are available from an illegal source vs what drugs are available from a package store (where you would have bought marijuana if it was legal)? It is not a dangerous drug in the sense that it leads you to more dangerous drugs (although I do not condone using or abusing it), anti-marijuana propaganda is infinitely more dangerous than private marijuana use by those over 18 years old!

The real fear is that the rest of the world will realise that marijuana has proven medicinal properties that will render the greedy pharma pigs out of business if people quit clinging to their bottles of pills like comfort blankets.

This answer makes the most sense to me. Someone willing to experiment with marijuana would also likely be more willing to experiment with other drugs based on their personality traits. This should not, however, imply a causal link between marijuana and "hard drug" use.

It all depends on the individual. As an example, some people cannot stop using marijuana after using it for the first time, while others may not even like the smell of it and will not ever use it.
