Is lying ever justified? If so, under what types of circumstances?

Many believe there are certain occasions where it is ok to lie. We live in a
society that actually conditions us to lie. Our employers ask us to lie
for them on many occasions. For instance, the secretary who "covers" for
the boss when he doesn't want to be disturbed and the salesman who
makes claims for his product which are not true are both lying. Many
times our "embellishments" on job recommendations for friends and
acquaintances are nothing but lies.
The wife asks her husband if she looks fat in this dress. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings and tells her she looks just fine.
Christians are told "Thou shalt not lie", but the truth is, to whatever extent, whether it be the little white lie, or just an exaggeration, whether you are Christian, Jewish, involved in Scientology or Atheism, whether you are a democrat, a republican, libertarian, etc., we all do.
Where do you draw the line? When, if ever, is lying justified?

Lying is justified when my niece asks me about santa or the tooth fairy. I think she'll forgive me when she gets older (lol). I will never lie about the important things and I consider myself to be a basically honest person and one who is loyal and trustworthy.
Those I think are okay. I think stuff like the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy Santa Clause are okay even though they aren't real for little kids
Out right lying about something to stay out of trouble ( like skipping class or being somewhere you shouldn't have been ) or to avoid consequences because you were in the wrong isn't right.
'Honesty is the best policy' ....is what we tell our children...so we know what they're up to.
