Is it wrong to try to give elementary grads as many awards as you can?

When i was Principal I tried to give most Grads an award.....I guess I was a bad lady!! It seemed all the gifted got them.I thought it was an incentive for high school. I still remember mine Perfect Attendance 8 yrs.

- Pam 2012/06/12 16:34:46I thinkMy daughters did not win too many awards in grade school, but in middle and high school they won a lot including the Principal's cup when they were in middle school (that damn trophy weighs a ton!). Both went on to win scholarships and my youngest made the Dean's list her first semester of college. I think it was good to them to know that their hard work would be rewarded.reply
- Kaola 2012/06/12 05:51:30it's wrongThey rewarded me one day in my school for being a nice dancer yet i didn't know even how do it. So it is wrong most especially now days.reply

- XENON23 2012/06/12 01:11:53None of the above+1I am not sure. At higher grades I would say yes that would be wrong but at lower as you say I think it might be ok. I did not start to do go down hill with my grade until the 5th grade when I started have emotional trouble from abuse. I got better but then dropped out in the 10th grade. I still read a lot and later got a GED and started to go to Jr. College and then a 4 year college. That saved me but I still failed to finish. Now I feel to old to go back even though I know many who do.reply
- Heavy 2012/06/12 00:23:26it's wrong+1I didn't receive awards in grade school til I moved to florida. Then I got an award for reading one book. I was only in that school for a month before summer. It was ridiculous to get an award for nothing. You don't get rewarded just for being at work or in college. You actually have to try and achieve something. It sends the wrong message to reward kids for nothingreply
- FencerCat 2012/06/12 00:12:28I think+1People are award happy these days. I'm opposed to sport competitions where every one gets a medal, too. When I was in school, there was an all-around outstanding performance award, and top award for each subject. I only had 6 years perfect attendance by 8th grade and 10 by 12th grade (I missed a week in 3rd because of German measles and about 2 weeks, all told in first grade because of chronic ear aches.)reply
- Jan Haskell 2012/06/11 23:54:54I think+2Since we have to point out their mistakes, I think it's extra important to point out their achievements ... no matter how small.reply

I second!reply - CTF 2012/06/11 23:53:26I think+1I don't think it's wrong to have several categories for awards, as long as they're for meaningful achievments. Perfect attendance, good grades, good behavior awards, etc... I see no problem with that.reply

+1Very true.reply - Deborah 2012/06/11 22:59:44I think+2I think it's the perfect incentive. Even to this day, which is many many moons from elementary school, I still beam with pride at the acknowledgment of my accomplishments I received while in grade school. I have no doubt that they in some way helped propelled me towards my decision to attend and go all the way through college. You did a good thing sister. Be proud.reply
