I mean, if you're just joking, what the harm? Its not like you're actually racist... well, in most cases. If you get offended maybe you should develop a sense of humor or grow thicker skin.

It doesn't matter if you're joking or not, you could still hurt someone's feelings or make them really angry just for saying it.

It can be. There are a bunch of ignorant jokes out there that do nothing but really insult ethnic groups. If your are not a certain race and are publicly using these jokes then you will be in the wrong. If you have a group of people you feel comfortable saying these jokes to then keep it in the group. When people make fat joke, or ugly jokes, or social class jokes, or jokes about sex when the party it offends is there that is called passive aggressive behavior. The second anyone gets talked about they want to be all in the person's face. Throw in racially charged jokes and you may well get your @$# beat. No matter what race your are talking about. Jokes in shows and movies tend to toe the line pretty well.

Laughing at racist jokes requires you to buy into the stereotypes they're based on.

That's ridiculous. T_T I'm white/Hispanic. I laugh at, for example, illegal alien jokes, I know not all Hispanics are illegal aliens.

Grow up, people. Listen to the real racists. They don't laugh. To a white supremacist, there are no funny blacks, or funny black jokes.

The things that distinguishes people from animals includes the ability to laugh at oneself. I can laugh at anyone and everyone. Get a life, and you'll realize that all of your human brethren are funny.

It really depends on the joke and the spirit in which it's said. If it's mean-spirited and the person is using the joke as an excuse for actual racism, that's not okay. But just laughing about racial stereotypes when it's clear that one is not racist? I don't see a problem with that.

If it's a joke, I don't see the problem. But then are people who say everything is a joke, and they use that excuse to be rude to others.
It all depends on the person who is saying, and the person who is listening, Someone who suffered from racism, might not find it funny as others who just know racism for news and history.

It depends. I laugh at jokes about my ethnic background, but there will always be thin-skinned people that will take offense.

A person has to be careful with that and the PC police; it can have some horrific consequences....

I try to find the humour in all things in life including those things which seem unlaughable. Racsim is no different. If I see or hear something that I think is funny---- I laugh. I am thankful that I can do that.

It's a funny thing, Lo, almost nobody claims to be racist, 'specially in these pc times, but almost everybody I can think of actually harbors some inner, secret racist attitudes.

...which is not to say that it's wrong to laugh at the ignorance of racists. It's what made "All in the Family"'s Archie Bunker so funny. Very few racists know that they are so because it's mostly subconscious, and so very few ractists can openly admit they're racist. My longest standing friend, a Black lady raised in the ghettos of St. Louis, says if we laugh at the expense of the disenfranchised, we're racists.

That was my attitude until my friend explained how they can perpetuate hate and mind-numbing stereotypes. She had lived with the ill effects. I, as a white male Christian, had not. Empathy doesn't always come easily. In fact it seldom does. For example, Conservatives like Goldwater, Cheney, and Portsman all had to have and get to know gay relatives to abandon their rigid positions about gays.
