Is It Worse for Teens to Smoke Pot or Cigarettes?

Here's the good news: Fewer teens are smoking cigarettes. Here's the bad news: More of them are smoking pot. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only 18 percent of teens said they smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, but 23 percent said they smoked marijuana in the same time frame.

teens pot

So why are adolescents choosing pot over cigarettes? A study from the University of Michigan found that teens have gotten the message that cigarettes are bad for you, but seem to believe marijuana is less harmful.

Alcohol, however, is still teens' top drug of choice. More than 1 in 3 high school students reported current alcohol use in 2011, and 1 in 5 high school students reported binge drinking, CBS reports. Do you think it's more dangerous for teens to smoke pot? Or cigarettes?

Major marijuana myth: pot use use can be a cause of death. So say many anti-drug warriors, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently wrote to a constituent that "marijuana and other narcotics" can lead to death.

PotleafAccording to Time magazine, "No one has ever died of THC [marijuana] poisoning, mostly because a 160-pound person would have to smoke roughly 900 joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose."

In 1988, DEA Administrative Judge Francis Young concluded, "In order to induce death, a smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette."

Unfortunately? LOL I can think of allot worse things teens could be doing! Try simple over-the-counters, many foods and drinks at the regular store! LOL Give me a break! High-fructose corn syrup is waaaay worse than pot, and there's a historical epidemic of deadly ADHD drugs 10's of millions of kids are on now, in the US alone! HAHAHA!
Get this ridiculous establishment propaganda the hell outta here! Total garbage!

Actually thats completely false. While cigarettes hurt your lungs, pot actually doesnt. The only major side effect for pot is slight memory loss.

I was pot smoker in the Netherlands and it cured my asthma, certain allergies, helped me manage my chronic pain (from Spina-bifida Meningocele) and lowered my stress levels so my hair stopped falling out and grew lush and long. I moved back to Australia and within 3 months I had to chop it all off due to half of it falling out as stress took over once more.
It's not that I can't handle stress. I handle it pretty damned well since I cannot recall a single time in my life where I didn't have it, but the 4 years I was able to grab a joint when I needed it helped my body control the rush of chemicals from my brain that would normally trigger the anxiety attacks.

The doctors there even took me off the heavy meds I had been on for years because pot was doing a better job of it. They don't have the stigma and can see the benefits.

He was probably giving you a prescription for a drug while passing on this stupid information. You should have told him that you prefer to eat pot rather than smoke it and he would have told you that it causes colin cancer.

I don't think there is such a thing as a pot chain-smoker. Maybe there are a lot of harmful chemicals in marijuana, but nobody smokes a pack a day, as most regular smokers do.

Lungs were designed to provide oxygen to the body, not to have smoke pumped into them. Neither is a good idea. However, there are over 5000 carcinogenic toxins in ever cigarette drag, and I do not think marijuana can match that.

Granted I smoke both, but I would have to say cigarettes are definitely worse. Cigarettes kill a couple hundred thousand people a year in the U.S., but cannabis kills absolutely zero people in recorded history.

And here's why: My dad smoked both cigarettes and pot during his teen years. At nearly 60, he's still totally addicted to cigarettes but hasn't touched weed for as long as I can remember. Nicotine is FAR more addictive than marijuana.

    Longterm= cigarettes by far

I wouldn't want my teenager smoking pot though- because it is ILLEGAL. Try getting searched based on a 'visual profile' and getting caught with an excess of pot. That sounds like fun right? So yes, if you're a black or a poor teenager you have a highly likelihood of being randomly searched. For this reason I would not allow my teenager to smoke pot.

Yeah, pot has so many bad stuff in it, but if my child was smoking either, I'd rather him smoke pot than cigs. At least pot has SOME benefits to it (though you can get 'em through safer methods, and they are highly outweighed by risks), and tobacco has nothing good in them.

It's crazy to try to justify pot-smoking by saying that it's "better" than tobacco or alcohol.

Even if it is "better" than those things, it doesn't matter. People still shouldn't use it.

It's a drug that you're sucking into your lungs, people. That alone makes it bad for you.

    Duh.
  • Annai21 JenSemPa 2012/06/13 02:54:40

Well then in that case lets make tylenol and coffee illegal also. Both are technically considered drugs. And in truth, both can hurt people worse than pot.

she said sucking into LUNGS not stomach, even though I disgaree with Jen, Annai21, and yes, Tylenol and coffee are pretty much worse than marijuana, which is funny because both aren't exactly BAD per se. The only reason it's such a big taboo, and it's SOOO bad is because it's illegal. Who gives a damn if it's illegal? Can't anyone think outside of the government? Read Animal Farm and then come back.
    Thanks :)

You are quite correct. What noone seems to consider is the fact that you can eat pot mixed with virtually anything and avoid lung smoke while still getting the high. People who are in the business of marijuana sell food product for 'medical' reasons.
