Is It Worse for Teens to Smoke Pot or Cigarettes?

Here's the good news: Fewer teens are smoking cigarettes. Here's the bad news: More of them are smoking pot. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only 18 percent of teens said they smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, but 23 percent said they smoked marijuana in the same time frame.

teens pot

So why are adolescents choosing pot over cigarettes? A study from the University of Michigan found that teens have gotten the message that cigarettes are bad for you, but seem to believe marijuana is less harmful.

Alcohol, however, is still teens' top drug of choice. More than 1 in 3 high school students reported current alcohol use in 2011, and 1 in 5 high school students reported binge drinking, CBS reports. Do you think it's more dangerous for teens to smoke pot? Or cigarettes?

Major marijuana myth: pot use use can be a cause of death. So say many anti-drug warriors, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently wrote to a constituent that "marijuana and other narcotics" can lead to death.

PotleafAccording to Time magazine, "No one has ever died of THC [marijuana] poisoning, mostly because a 160-pound person would have to smoke roughly 900 joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose."

In 1988, DEA Administrative Judge Francis Young concluded, "In order to induce death, a smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette."

If you're comparing it to regular driving You must be high, come back when you're sober. Unless you're comparing it drive while drunk and driving while high. At that I won't argue.

Yes I'm comparing it to regular driving. Distractions and emotions play a factor on your driving ability. Have you ever smoked pot?

Studies have shown pot doesn't impair driving ability and actually improves in some cases.

But it does effect the choices made while driving, which in turn effects driving. Like you said in some cases it imptoves driving, not going to bash down your idea because I don't have any statistics. However you said "in SOME" cases not all.

well.....in some cases I'm sure it does not. Your seat belt can get you killed too.

Yes, but it's more likely you would survive a car crash with a seatbelt, where as if you didn't chances of survival decrease drastically.

Yes, but how many of those motor vehicle deaths were while a driver was impaired
by pot smoking and getting behind the wheel. How many died of lung cancer because a
joint has 10 times more cancer causing chemicals in it. Maybe you can't die from pot immediately, but in the long run it will bite you in the A$$.

Maybe you should read the comments before making assumptions. You don't have to smoke it to understand marijuana is less harmful than cigarettes.

Doesn't change the fact that its bad for you, blah blah it's medicinal. Well teens most definitely aren't using it for medicinal purposes.

It is bad, unless you vaporize it or eat it. But it's definitely less bad than tobacco.

The withdrawal effects from quitting smoking cigarettes was MUCH WORSE, head ache, mood swings, nightmares... etc... from quitting pot, NO physical effects from quitting at all... nicotine is MUCH more additive in my opinion.

With the additives and ease of purchase, cigarettes in my opinion are a much bigger threat to the health of our teenagers. This makes me wonder, if pot were legalized would it be a matter of time before greedy people would add harmful additives to increase sales and addiction, just like the tobacco companies. I don't believe pot is a gateway drug but instead it is the means by which it is procured that put buyers in contact with people who will introduce more expensive and addictive drugs to increase their profits.
  • Shawee lea dakota 2012/06/12 15:56:53

Naw, it's not legal for a couple reasons and yes its all about money. Look at how much money is made off of cigs and alcohol, both are controlled substances which allows companies to profit as well as bring in tax revenue. Legalize marijuana and people will grow it in their backyard or buy if from a friend growing it, it will become impossible to tax it..and I believe taxing a plant should be going against our Constitution.

Both are bad. That choice not afforded.

The trouble with this country is we compare one sin to another. That is like a rotten parent finding some sort of solace by claiming he could be worse.

Since when did we stop attempting to be better? To compare ourselves to a higher ideal. To be drug FREE.

I almost lost a friend to cigarettes and alcohol this week. A beautiful woman. Actually, a gorgeous woman. She just survived all the transfusions and surgeries by the thinnest of margins. I will be able to enjoy her for a little while longer. She swears she will give up both. It might be hard. She owns a successful night club.

Keep all this crap away from you. I am in a bad,bad mood over this and the nurses at her hospital critical care ward confided to me they see tragedy like this everyday and yet they still smoke and drink. Maybe they will now do some of it at her club.

    Toughen up America.

I don't think its "sinful" to do either...that's like someone claiming its sinful to eat fast food or let your body be overweight. I'm sorry for your friend it might sound messed up but give her some pot it'll save her some money when the hospital try to pump her with drugs.

Cigarettes are full of poisons added to the Tobacco. Everybody I know who has been a heavy smoker died from cancer or related disease. Tobacco is addictive and the manufauctures of tobacco products has worked on increasing the addictiveness.

They dont want you to smoke weed ,you might wake up !!!!
Our leaders ,those in HIGH places dont want you to wake up ,dont want you to think ,dont want you to challenge.
I dont believe in our leaders anymore.
Yes ,drink and smoke cigarettes ,it keeps you unhealty ,keeps you down below ,keeps you depressed.
You know they do talk about the tree of all knowledge.....
To think it could be ,the pot plant...
Guess I will burn in hell :)
Or are we in hell allready ?
Tipical that there is a way around some problems .......
We would rather suffer than grow

In our country ,the choice is this .....
Drink and get raped in jail if you are cought.
Well I think then the "harder" stuff might be more worth the "effort"
The payoff is worth it anyway.
Everything in life ,is damaging ....
The end result is the same ,death.
At the very least go out with a bang ,and stick it to the man !
Fck the law in this regard
    The law is disregard....

I don't think so. In my experience people who smoke cigarettes are as grumpy as people who are addicted to coffee. Pot smokers aren't tensed at all when they can't have their smoke. They're just like, whatever, so I don't smoke today.

I've known people heavily addicted to (the non-addictive) pot.
They build a reliance on the high, then they're as bad without it as any other drug addict. I'd say that constitutes a significant effecton mental health.

The resistance is only temporarily, if you quit for a couple of days, or weeks if you're a heavy smoker, the effect will be almost the same as it was the first time. The addiction you're talking about is mental, not physical.

    Damn, chose Pot by accident...

Cigarettes are much more addictive, and therefore it would be much more difficult to stop smoking them. Plus they are also much cheaper, I think, meaning in more cigarettes smoked.
