Is It Worse for Teens to Smoke Pot or Cigarettes?

Here's the good news: Fewer teens are smoking cigarettes. Here's the bad news: More of them are smoking pot. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only 18 percent of teens said they smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, but 23 percent said they smoked marijuana in the same time frame.

teens pot

So why are adolescents choosing pot over cigarettes? A study from the University of Michigan found that teens have gotten the message that cigarettes are bad for you, but seem to believe marijuana is less harmful.

Alcohol, however, is still teens' top drug of choice. More than 1 in 3 high school students reported current alcohol use in 2011, and 1 in 5 high school students reported binge drinking, CBS reports. Do you think it's more dangerous for teens to smoke pot? Or cigarettes?

Major marijuana myth: pot use use can be a cause of death. So say many anti-drug warriors, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently wrote to a constituent that "marijuana and other narcotics" can lead to death.

PotleafAccording to Time magazine, "No one has ever died of THC [marijuana] poisoning, mostly because a 160-pound person would have to smoke roughly 900 joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose."

In 1988, DEA Administrative Judge Francis Young concluded, "In order to induce death, a smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette."

I should have made this more clear, I already know that pure tobacco has nicotine in it, I'm just saying that the additives in cigarettes make the nicotine far more addictive (a pretty evil tactic if I do say so myself). If you smoke pure tobacco it's much easier to control yourself or even stop altogether. As for marijuana I'm aware of the other methods of using it, it's just that joints are the most common thats why I refered to them. On a side note I've heard that vaporizers release over 90% of the THC in marijuana, wouldn't that make it easier to overdose on THC?

There is no way humanly possible to ingest enough cannabis to cause an overdose on thc.

Why? Because pot doesnt cause cancer, because pot is all natural, because pot can heal you, because pot can cure cancer, because pot is a miracle plant.

And cigarettes only have one use, to be smoked.

While out of cannabis you can make food, tinctures, joints, etc for healing, while with hemp (also cannabis) you can make clothes, fuel, houses, food, and much much more.

    Hemp Hemp Hooray!

    Smoke weed.

maybe one day, after the whole entire system crumbles. Hopefully, someone with intelligence will survive and be able to utilize all the things hemp does.

People keep saying pot messes with your mind, but it doesn't, and it leaves no longterm or short-term damage. Also, there has never been a report of "THC overdose/poisoning" and they're now using it for medical reasons in the US.
Cigarettes are actually called cancer sticks. It does damage to your body, and there are many cases of people dying from lung cancer due to cigarettes.
Don't think you have a point because "marajuana is illegal". You are obviously mis-imformed.

if we assume that business controls a lot of our legislation - its no wonder pot is still illegal - as the two things it causes the most - free-thinking and (admittedly) less-productivity - are the two things that corporations hate the most in their workers....
  • Ahrtal mankatt 2012/06/12 15:13:57

I wouldn't want someone high from alcohol or pot working on a drill press or grain elevator, either----or operating an automobile or a combine. It has nothing to do with corporate greed stereotyping. The workplace is no place for anyone to be high on anything. If everyone were stoned at work, I really doubt that we would have a lot of quality durable goods or services for domestic use and export. Injury lawyers would make out ok, though. Just legalize it, tax it, and subject it to the same regulation as with alcohol. It is legal to produce limited amounts of beer and wine for personal consumption, so you could still use your "herb garden" for friends and family.

This isn't even a good question... pot isn't physically addictive, doesn't cause cancer, and actually has a very pleasant plant-y smell. Cigarettes, on the other hand, are highly addictive, cause cancer, and make people reek.
And yes, pot temporarily alters the chemical balance in your brain. But, hello? So does every drug in the world, including cigarettes.

I find it good news that teens are switching to weed, Cigarettes are far worth and they do not increase neural connections within the brain as Cannabis has been shown to do. Cannabis is illegal because it is beneficial. Do the research yourself.

Pot is a stimulant, making you high in a way that you're more focused and everything is more clear and allows you to relax. Cigarettes create tar in your lungs leading to lung cancer. There's no question that cigarettes are much more worse than pot. It pisses me off to see society's viewpoints that smoking pot is the worst thing ever. They should switch them and make marijuana legal and cigarettes illegal.

Nicotine is the most addictive substance on the planet. Cigarettes are filled with deadly chemicals and Carbon Monoxide. Pot can be eaten rather than smoked. It has many helpful properties.

Unlike nicotine and tobacco, cannabis is completely non-toxic.
And for those of you stating that pot is worse.. Do your research. Sounds to me like you're actually pushing cancer and bad health upon the community.
