Is It Worse for Teens to Smoke Pot or Cigarettes?

Here's the good news: Fewer teens are smoking cigarettes. Here's the bad news: More of them are smoking pot. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only 18 percent of teens said they smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, but 23 percent said they smoked marijuana in the same time frame.

teens pot

So why are adolescents choosing pot over cigarettes? A study from the University of Michigan found that teens have gotten the message that cigarettes are bad for you, but seem to believe marijuana is less harmful.

Alcohol, however, is still teens' top drug of choice. More than 1 in 3 high school students reported current alcohol use in 2011, and 1 in 5 high school students reported binge drinking, CBS reports. Do you think it's more dangerous for teens to smoke pot? Or cigarettes?

Major marijuana myth: pot use use can be a cause of death. So say many anti-drug warriors, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently wrote to a constituent that "marijuana and other narcotics" can lead to death.

PotleafAccording to Time magazine, "No one has ever died of THC [marijuana] poisoning, mostly because a 160-pound person would have to smoke roughly 900 joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose."

In 1988, DEA Administrative Judge Francis Young concluded, "In order to induce death, a smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette."

Neither are healthy. Teens are too young to be able to smoke pot in moderation to be able to function properly in school. It would definitely interfere with sports and studies. Cigarettes may be safer than pot initially, but are more dangerous than pot when you consider long term affects like addiction, cancer, and COPD.

Cigarettes have 4,800 chemicals that can lead to cancer. And people who smoke young experience higher rates of respiratory illness. They will more likely to have diminished physical fitness, lung functioning, and lung growth. I say cigarettes are worse than marijuana.

Both are illegal for minors. Cigarettes are chemically addictive. Pot is not.

Not saying that either are great, but smoking cigarettes is much worse. With weed they might have trouble with school, or become psychologically addicted. But cigarettes ruin your health, and are physically addictive to a very high extent.

I was a major Marlboro smoker and a (slightly) less major pothead. I noticed after quitting cigarettes I could breath a lot easier was generally in better shape. And while I don't smoke pot (as often) anymore I haven't had any problems with my breathing.

I've been to many funerals that the deceased was a heavy smoker of tobacco. Even when diagnosed, the victim could NOT or refused to quit. So sad.

I've never been to a funeral where the deceased died from using cannabis.

It's been medically proven that cannabis lessens the pressure on the optic nerve for glucoma patients. Which I don't doubt because the blood vessels dialate in the user's eyes or what we called 'Chinese eyes' that was the tell-tale sign one had been tokin'.

The use of cannabis is also beneficial for the treatment of those on chemotherapy who cannot keep their nutrients down. The use of weed keeps their food down in their stomachs where it belongs.

Cannabis is also a painkiller without the harmful addiction possibility of opiates in the user.

So, . . . I, myself have used cannabis for pain relief and I am not an abuser. It does alleviate my 6-hernia pain with degenerative disc disease and I can reconcile my use of it by Genesis 1:11-13.

Don't judge another until you have walked a mile in their moccasins.

It's a hard choice but pot doesn't have anything in it to get you addicted unlike cigarettes who have nicotine. Then again pot is a mind altering substance and cigarettes are not. But atleast pot would be easier to quit if someone wanted to so they arn't as bad.

Ever heard of marijuana causing lung cancer? Me neither. It's debatably less addicting. Either way, to me both are better than alcohol, which can make people violent or incoherent so easily.

I haven't smoked either. I've seen people on oxygen that have smoked too long struggling to breath tho because they aren't old enough to be ready to die. Must be a scary thing to have lungs that a used up and your not ready to die.

Cigarettes have killed thousands. Pot.. None and less than one percent of cannabis smokers have moved on to worse drugs. The term "gateway drug" is always relative to the person and was made by the government who's only strong standing reason to make it illegal was because they werent making profit. Plain and simple pot is dangerous sure but it is the way lesser of two evils

Actually there should be a vote for both. Both are killers. Both can cause cancer. Pot is a gateway drug. You don't know what was used to fertilize the pot plants or to protect them from insects.

i just wish to point out that both of your arguments against pot (the gateway argument and the fertilizer argument) are only problems because of pots illegality. If it was legal, you would know what insecticides were being used because the FDA would regulate it and it would not be a gateway drug because you would not be buying from drug dealers (who convince people to buy some of their other products)

Yes, your right and all the facts are wrong, personal bias is so effective and we should all be ruled by opinionated dictators who know little to nothing about reality...oh wait, we actually already are...I guess that really explains where you are coming from, huh?

Cannabis isn't addictive, the same as guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people the same as PEOPLE ((DECIDE)) they MUST have weed...and BTW numbnuts, more people are addicted to and die from SMOKING CIGS THAN ((ANY)) OTHER THING ON THIS PLANET. Educate yourself, monkey.

Well, I won't be a hypocrit and say pot is completely harmless, because it can cause lung damages. But face this: cigarretes are way more addictive, a "regular" smoker smokes around 20 cigarretes a day; who would smoke this amount of pot in one day?
