Is it time for all women to stop tolerating be called disgusting names?

After Rush Limbaugh called the young woman those names, I began to notice how many times and how many men do that on a regular basis. I cannot tell you how many women, I know, have put up with this abuse from their fathers, brothers, husbands and boyfriends. The comedians such as Bill Mahrer and Joy Behar are just as bad by using those words. All of us women must say no more.

It really depends upon the situation. I really feel that there is a big difference between a woman in the public spot light and a regular woman living their life. Not saying Bill was right when he called a woman a slut but he did clarify by saying she was a talk whore slut. No one actually believes she is a "slut" but a young woman would probably be teased a lot by people she knows and doesn't really know but see a lot.

It doesn't help when women like Debbie Wasserman Schulz blast Limbaugh for it ... two months after appearing on Bill Maher's program, yukking it up and having a good old time.

That was after Maher called certain conservative women names that were way worse than what Limbaugh said.

In other words, women like Debbie need to be a bit less selective in their indignation.

You are right about that. But I am talking about when a man directly insults a woman in her home with these words.

Well things have changed a lot but somethings haven't and other things have along way to go. Women seem to be easy target sometimes for some people and it isn't right.

nobody should be called disgusting names, be they male or female; gender has nothing to do with it.

I agree with you, but I also believe it is something when men do it that is very threatening and might lead to more abuse.

Those women acted terribly, but there is still no reason to scream those words at them. You also are talking about a few women; not the majority.

Women have put up with it for so long unless you start bringing men to court and winning major law suits or kicking their asses it is probably not going to end anytime soon.
I grew up in a very liberal area and was shocked when I went south and west in this country and saw how women allowed themselves to be treated. I know where Rush Limbaugh grew up and women are 2nd class citizens there. It is like the American Taliban there so he is just reflecting his environment.
If Rush had said that to my wife, he has a right to his freedom of speech but he also has the responsibility to protect his fat ass from my wife suing it and me kicking it.

You are so right. It is still the dark ages for women in some places and some homes even in America. Hard to believe, but true.

I have traveled all over the world and seen different people and cultures. It is astounding that women's roles in society are so different within just a few miles of geography. Maybe the internet will help this and the web is still quite young. I am an equality person in all ways and maybe a little harsh when it comes to intolerant people.

I think we women need to get over ourselves. How about don't associate with, don't listen to, don't watch, anyone who uses ANY LANGUAGE you think is offensive; language directed at women, men, another race, Christians, Jews, Muslims, whatever.

Yes, but what if you are married to or have to live in a house with a foul mouth? I think if women begin early by either walking away, or if it is a boyfriend, end the relationship if he calls her these names.

I suppose one can't do anything about one's dad until one is old enough to leave the house. You are right, however, that one sure doesn't need to take it from anyone else. And a boyfriend that uses that language is sending a pretty clear signal of what he thinks about women. And, by the way, if we wish men to respect us by deed and speech, we should be respectful in our deeds and speech. A woman/girl swearing like a sailor sort of deserves whatever is said back to her.

Yes, I agree and a mother can teach her son to be respectful and nice to women, but if his father is not, then the boy generally imitates the dad. A mother needs to not say crude stuff either.

I hope so. i think it takes everyone to speak up and tell someone the language is wrong and after a generation it might work. But TV shows also have to cut out the crude language.

I send the link back to Hollywood. They started being provocative with a few words here and there until they could get away with it and put it out everywhere. And, in truth, parents gave up the ghost and began using it and letting their kids use it. Somewhere we, as a nation, decided common courtesy, respect for the next guy - whether you are of the same faith or political leaning or not - was not something worthwhile. So what you see in the news and on SH is what you get.

Yes and what a shame that people gave into the common crud. Hopefully, the pendulum will swing back, not to Victorian days, but to decent behavior from people.

Now you're talking. And do you think it's possible that as women, we could encourage other women and young girls to not be out spouting the F word in public where everyone can hear? Do young people really not understand the disgusting connotation of that particular word?

Yes, we grew up never using those words in front of parents or teachers, but we did use them sometimes, because we thought it was funny as in a joke. We never called each other those names and My husband does not do it. I know this lovely woman though who is 74 and her husband calls her all the awful names you can think of. She can't really leave him, but she at least has her own room and doesn't speak to him.

Tough to get to that age and be caught and unable to get away. You're right, we did use those words. We used them in small groups, away from crowds and in "appropriate forums." The F word never came out of my mouth until I was grown with two children and I thought one of them was about to be killed - then it just flew out. I hate that word, along with the C word and the P word and the D word for men.
