A locally owned restaurant decided to put up a "Gay Friendly" sign on the front door to encourage the gay community to eat there alongside with their straight customers of their business, was it really necessary to this ?

The owner thought it was necessary.

I'd like to see the day where no one thought it was necessary.

When I was a waitress it was my job to treat every customer with cheerful respectful service. I never concerned myself with race, creed, color or sexual preference. I don't understand the reason one would need to post a sign like that.

How great is it to be reassured that you won't be harassed when you enter a restaurant? It's by no means necessary though. Most people aren't going to enter one and yell out "I'M GAY AND HERE TO STAY!"

Restaurants aren't just about food though - they are places where people congregate based on atmosphere and service as much as food.

    (1) No frivolity. Comfort.

    (2) I'm sure they're welcome as well. Again, there are places where gay couples like to know they can go and, you know, act like a couple....

    Their business, their choice.
It may bring some business in, it may drove other business away.
    not our place to judge.

Is it NECESSARY? Well, if I were a business owner in a gay community I might try that sign to increase business. As a customer it doesn't mean anything to me, either the food and service are decent or they're not.

Couples often go to restaurants on dates of various kinds.

Couples behave differently than people of different beliefs, etc. So there's a difference in knowing where you can go and feel comfortable to act as you wish.

Consider the fact that many people don't feel comfortable showing affection in public with their significant other. ANY affection, mind you, that would suggest the nature of the relationship.

Knowing that the restaurant is specifically welcoming allows many to feel at ease just being comfortable with who they are.

Knowing this actually lets a lot of them act like regular people.

I do NOT in any way advocate PDA in anything but the lightest sense. I'm kind of a prude like that. ;-)

But, there are clearly things that you do that physically indicates when you're a couple that aren't over the top but are clear.

I feel like, also, you think that the sign is meant to promote an exclusive clientele, where it seems to be about ensuring the LGBT community knows that they can come in and act how you want alongside with the straight local clientele.

I see where you're coming from - but this goes back to my original point. There are many times where gay couples can't be certain that they can relax. When a restaurant puts something like this out, then they know that they're dealing with both friendly management and a group of people both gay and straight that won't make a big deal of it all.

I think that the difficulty is that you're viewing it from the perspective of "this minority group" made up of individuals. Gay people would probably not feel the need for something like this to eat there alone. Knowing that they can go there with a significant other and not deal with glances, comments, etc. - which still happens - is a great relief.

    And so are many people.

    Others aren't.

And unfortunately, in some places people need to be careful about understanding that.

In NYC, I generally feel no qualms about acting comfortably in most areas. But there are parts of the country I wouldn't. Sometimes, therefore, it is necessary to signal where a "safe space" is.
