Call me old fashioned, but I don't think cell phones should be allowed to be ON in class, most less used in class. It should be against the rules much as not passing was "in my day."

Well it's certainly not going to help you learn, but it's your prerogative as long as the phone isn't making any noise. In my classes, it's much more disruptive when the professor confronts a texting student than when they're just texting. So I say let it go and let them suffer their own consequences.

Any more than it's ok to talk amongst yourselves about a subject other than the class; it shows a lack of respect for the teacher.

No, it is never okay. Not just for you, but you texting is a definite distraction to others. Whether we can hear the clicking on the keyboard, the tapping on the touchscreen, or just having to watch you obviously texting even though you're trying to be sneaky and hide it. If you can't go a class period without being on your cellphone, you have some serious problems to deal with. Heck, if you can't go a day without being on it you also probably have some issues.

Your teacher spends inordinate amounts of time assembling your curriculum, it is incumbent upon you to shut off your toy, so that she/he has your undivided attention. They are attempting to improve your state in life.

And they should be left of the lockers...or turned OFF and in the pocket or purse or backpack...If I was a teacher, and detected them,,,,I would confiscate it, put their name on it, and send it to the office for pick up after school....

This is a bad trend to allow to get started....Also, laptops, tablets, and the like...

It's not much to expect is it? A few hours a day in class to actually pay attention??
When these 'kids' find themselves in the workplace things are gonna change, it won't be a telling off, it will be 'fired'....best to get the message now...education isn't free..just like benefit stamps. So get a grip and grow up !!!

Good question, since the teacher was usually talking about things I had already learned.

They teach to the slowest person in the room, the quicker ones just have to deal.

or the teacher is having a conversation about something that in no way relates to the subject, thats what my maths teacher does all the time -_-

Of course, when I went to school, there were no cell phones, so I had to rely on reading books, which didn't help.

If "only during an emergency" is an option, why would anyone pick no? Does that mean that you people who picked no think even during an emergency, like, say, a massive shooting spree, people still shouldn't text for help or something? Because it's "against the rules"? Please help me understand why texting is still not okay even in an emergency.

No, that is cheating. Use your cell phones for research, but not for help on tests.

Even if its an emergency, the parent or whoever should call the front desk. But I guess if there's no other way to do it faster then whatever.

If I see a phone a warning will be issued. If I see it a second time it will go in the basket in the front of the room.

Not just No, but HELL NO!
If kids are texting their friends, when they're supposed to be LEARNING, then I'd say some kids need to be losing their cell-phones for the duration of the school year! Parents are forking out so much for their children's education nowadays, don't you think they deserve to get every pennies' worth?
As for the argument of using them for emergencies, the school can notify the students of anything that may have happened.

Like your pregnant wife's water just broke. Or grandma had a stroke and you are rushing to her side. Please inform your instructor that you are expecting an emergency text. Other wise, pay attention in class!!!!

Although back when I was back in high school c ell phones were not actually used in class as not everyone had them. However recently when I have been to school, texting and or using your phone in class is forbidden short of something that is life and death.

On my final for my trade course if your found with a phone you get a zero and you come back in however many months they deem to be punishment. In classes, if your phone makes a noise during a test you get a zero unless you told your teacher in writing before it rang.

Not like it's going to stop anyone from doing it. Even I'd do it if I could, except for the fact that I always have my phone on vibrate and it sounds like an earthquakes going off >.<
