Call me old fashioned, but I don't think cell phones should be allowed to be ON in class, most less used in class. It should be against the rules much as not passing was "in my day."

In a personal emergency, so as not to disrupt the class, with the instructor's permission.

"Only during an emergency"???? What kind of idiotic response is that?? So you must think that the teachers and other adults in the school can't take care of an emergency?? I'm thinking the ones who voted on that are the brats that think they need a cell phone or the parents who are controlled by their bratty children.

What if it was having your phone to be able to receive texts about family emergencies and to respond accordingly to the one who informed you?

Emergencies would be the only reason I feel texting in school should be allowed.

Yes. Texting is just as distracting as drawing on a piece of paper, so I don't see the difference. If kiddie wants to flunk, let 'em. Then he can face the wrath of whoever is in charge.

If there is an urgent situation, then the office can be called and the child/young person can be called to the office. There should be NO cellphones in a classroom.

It's totally rude to your instructor to be texting while they're trying to teach you. You have plenty of time to text later, between classes. You're in class to LEARN.

Phones should be turned off in schools - how does the teacher know the kid is not texting to get the right answers on a test being given? NO TEXTING.

I think that schools important and you should really focus and cell phones are one of the many distractions. But if its a real emergency then you should be able to text your parents or something. It depends on what kind of emergency it is

In the olden days, passing notes was a major NO-NO. Texting is merely the 21st century version of note passing.

No!! I'm in high school so I see it happening every class. It's very annoying. Pay attention!!!! The kids don't pay attention and then when it's time to do a worksheet or assignment they say "huh?" or "what?" or "Can you teach me again? I didn't get it." because they weren't listening and it wastes my time as well as the teacher's time and the other students' time that pay attention! But seriously ---- what do you even have to TALK about during school?! "Hey I'm just sitting here..." Can't you put your stupid phone down for 7 hours of the day? You'll have it for 133 hours a week to text if you just leave it alone for just 35 hours a week. It's really not that bad. You should be focused on the teacher and LEARNING. That's what you're there for!!! Urgh.

yes, but i think they shud take away texting when tests are being done because they could text chacha asking for answers. Because i knew someone that did that and got into tons of trouble. If they wanna text someone they should be able to, to maybe ask a question to their parents, "Will you bring my book to school, i left it at home." When the teachers usually don't let you call. Anyways, no matter if cellphones are allowed or not, children will still use them anyways.. haha no ones gonna stop them, so it really doesnt make a difference.

Hell, no! Why not just let tests be a group discussion of the answers. Pay attention! No matter how boring, texting and surfing the web do not belong.

If there is a true emergency, the parent or family member can call the school. By allowing emergency texts only opens the door to all others. Texting is a complete distraction. And with as many children that are failing in our schools, the last thing they need is even more distractions. Nothing is that important that they need to text anyone. As I stated earlier, if it's that important, the parent or family member can contact the school...

As a test prep coach and private college counselor, I find it very disconcerting when a student's phone goes off. It is also rude when students continuously stare at their phones looking for the latest text message. I am sure that every teacher would agree.
Texting has really gotten out of control and cell phones do not need to be in the classroom.

When is schoolwork going to be done? What about taking your time away from the teacher? Classroom time should be only used for the learning process.

I was the kind of student that could multi-task. I was able to have texting conversations and still get straight A's. Some students need to set all the attention on class but others could probably sleep and get done what needs to be done.

You should have your phone with you in school, but it should be on silent and put in your purse (or pocket).
