Is It OK to Have Booze at Disneyworld?

Disneyworld doesn't really strike us as the kind of place to swing back a few beers... but soon, the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida will feature a new restaurant that will serve both beer and wine. The new restaurant's name will be "Be Our Guest" (after the popular "Beauty and the Beast" song) and it will be French-themed.

And as Maribeth Bisienere, the vice president of food and beverage for Walt Disney Parks, puts it “You cannot walk into a French restaurant and not get a glass of wine or beer... It made more sense to do it than not to do it." Do you think it's OK to have beer and wine at a children's theme park?

TODAYTRAVEL.TODAY.COM reports:
Be our guest, be our guest, put our sommelier to the test? Starting this November, visitors to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Orlando may be tempted to rework the popular song from "Beauty and the Beast" when the park opens its newest dining venue, the French-themed Be Our Guest restaurant.

The Disney theme Parks were never meant to be only for children. Disneyland's Blue Bayou restaurant has been serving alcohol for decades.

    Wha??

There are already vendors walking around with carts selling cold ones. I saw no out of control park goers, thank you. (and I'm rather intolerant of those who over do it, I would notice if there were problem people)

Florida in the hot, summer sun. Crowds of sometimes pushy, rude tourists. Whiny children. People digging waaaaaay deep into your already stressed pockets for anything and everything you want or need along the journey of your 'meet the mouse' vacay.

Damned right a cold one sounds good. This restaurant sounds pretty nifty. But, in typical Disney fashion, it will probably cost about twice what it should. :(

A glass of wine is fine. Maybe then the parents will be able to deal with the long lines.

But no more than slightly less than two drinks, lest you cause The Event.

Having a glass of wine with your dinner only shows your kids it's possible to enjoy alcohol without actually getting drunk. I wouldn't personally drink wine or beer with my food, as I hate how it tastes...

Or having none will show you don't have to drink at all.

So you're never, ever going to drink in front of children?

That's up to the parents to decide. But showing kids that you don't have to get drunk every time you have a glass of wine can also be effective. So I see no problem with Disney offering wine and beer at their restaurant. As long as they limit the amount of alcohol served per table, and don't offer anything stronger than wine.

I've never been to Disneyworld but I would imagine standing in line for a million hours just to go on some rides and take pictures with people wearing costumes would make me want to have a few drinks and chief one.

It's not a children's theme park. It's a theme park meant for the whole family to enjoy.

No, it doesn't. My reply didn't exactly mention alcohol, either. It was just a statement about the park not being strictly for the kids.

But, there are a lot of people who enjoy having a wine or beer pairing with their food. The right beverage can make your food more enjoyable, and the right food can make your beverage more enjoyable. These types of alcoholic beverages have been available at Disneyland for quite some time depending on the restaurant at which you eat.

Some parents are probably going to want a little beer or wine with their dinner after such a busy Disney day.

Oh great, I see somebody has decided to get hurt feelings over a theme park serving alcohol now.. Even though it's been going on for decades already.

Why stop with booze, how about strip clubs in Disney too? Just imagine the possibilities. Experience Princess Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel (The Little Mermaid), etc.. in a whole new way. I can guarantee if there's a buck to be made from it, they're doing it.

By the way, Disney have been serving alcohol for quite some time.

Well it's not like kids don't know that adults drink alcohol. I feel that it's fine as long as the actors aren't drinking on the job.

I am a teetotaler and an adult. I don't want to smell beer sloshing around at an amusement park, personally. It's the only thing I dislike about Busch Gardens. I find it irritating that most people my age are so obsessed with alcohol- why is it necessary to have fun? I have no problem with beer drinkers, but is it too much to ask to sometimes have a bit of fun without alcohol?

Disney World definitely does cater to children, but then again children usually have parents with them. They will probably offer beer because it is profitable. No big deal- I've never been there in the first place.

Well, really i'm undecided. If people act drunk in the park, you can be sure security will boot them out. There are under cover cops in all of these parks. If people don't drink responsibly in that restaurant, you can be sure they will eventaully get rid of the booze.

Why is everything only fun with alcohol? This is mainly an attraction for children, and going with your children and no alcohol should be enough. We should have at least ONE amusement park that is all about the kids.

You said the park should be all about the children. Having a drink doesn't make a park more/less about them.
  • The.Z.V... Kae Kam 2012/09/21 02:38:10
    The.Z.Viru5
I said it was MOSTLY for children, not JUST children. But as I've said many times already to Sue, who apparently has a hard time wrapping her tiny mind around this concept, parents can go ONE day, surely, with their children without having a damn drink.
  • Kae Kam The.Z.V... 2012/09/21 13:37:33

You're missing the point. Some people enjoy a drink. They want, not need, to have one. The option is nice.
