Waiting in the Wings 2012/10/06 02:10:17Woof!+9As long as your pet is VERY WELL TRAINED and has GOOD MANNERS. I love my dog, but he's nuts. He's not a dog I can bring to work.

Or if it's during the weekend and you're working overtime.
Dogs and cats are by far the most likely to trigger allergies, so unless you work in a small office with little to no outside visitors, they're a big no-no. Either that or you'd have to bathe them every time you brought them in, and brush them thoroughly (what people are allergic to is the dander and the saliva (both contain proteins that cause allergic reactions). Which isn't good for the dog or cat, at least not on a daily basis.
Other small pets are known for causing allergies, but are far less likely - so again - small office and know your coworkers.
Other animals, however, tend to be nearly allergy-free (nearly. There are some oddball cases). Fish, frogs, etc... tend to be safe animals for office spaces, and by all means should be allowed. Having a fish tank (albeit a small one) at your office can actually improve productivity by acting as a stress reducer. I know that this is the case for myself, at least - my 8 gallon fish tank is compact, and it provides a nice, stress-reducing distraction now and again. I look at it when I'm too wound up to focus on my work, and after a minute of looking at my fish and watching them dart through the moss in the tank, I'm ready to go back to my work with a clear mind.
I highly recommend fish tanks in most office environments. As well as some nice, easy-to-care-for plants. They really do help!
Fish are pets. I know a great number of offices that allow fish.
People are allergic to animals.
It depends on the pet, the workplace, and the coworkers. Some people are allergic to various kinds of pet dander. Some people just don't like dogs, or cats, or hamsters, or whatever critter, so it makes for a tense working area.
I had a friend who worked in a junk yard.. he brought his German Shephard to work all the time.
Smells, hair, allergies, and time away spent monitoring and caring for pets are all good reasons why a boss wouldn't want them there.
It's like bringing kids to work.. it's just not conducive...While some people love pets (kids), not everyone does. Not all pets are well-behaved or ready to be around alot of other people, or around other pets....
Kids and pets are like a fart to a lot of people. They can only stand their own... LOL!
I have a beautiful dog greet me ever time I go to my general practitioner. He greets all patients and then just goes lie down and stays out of the way.
