Is It OK to Break Up With Someone on Their Birthday?

When a relationship is over, it's over. But is it ever OK to break up with someone on their birthday? Rich Santos, a writer for How About We, did just that: "In a past relationship, I broke up with a girl on her birthday," he writes. "As the big day was approaching, and she was making a bigger and bigger deal out of it, I internally thought of ways I could avoid the whole thing -- while wearing a smile on the outside. I realized it was time to break up when a soccer game I was scheduled to play in was more compelling than my girlfriend’s birthday."

Well, if you're more excited about a soccer game than celebrating your girlfriend's birthday, it's probably time to break up. But Santos was torn: Should he show up and celebrate his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's special day with her family? Or was it even crueler to go through motions?

"I thought hard about my quandary. It was inevitable that I was going to break up with her," he writes. "So, was it fair to go through with the birthday, faking my excitement and sending mixed signals? If I broke up with her a week after the birthday, she’d probably throw: 'you were just with my family at my birthday' in my face. But could I ever be horrible enough to break up with her a few days before or even (shudder) on her birthday?"

In the end, he broke up with his girlfriend ON her birthday ... and needless to say, he did not attend the family celebration. Do you think he did the right thing?

If you really don't want to by the person a gift, break up before the birthday

This is my thought too. You don't just wake up the morning of the person's birthday and think "Wow. This relationship has been so awesome and perfect until right this minute. I gotta break up with my BF/GF!!!"

And even if that does happen, unlikely as it seems, at that point, is it that hard to wait one more freaking day?

You should do it the day before their Birthday (or Christmas, etc) so you don't have to buy them a present.

You can get back together the day after if you want.

I'd send that to Hallmark. It's a natural for a greeting card.

Do it before her birthday, or a bit after, not ON the day. That is a TERRIBLE day to break up with someone.

Break up either before or after. Birthdays and other special events mean a lot to girls.

Uh, yeah. If you don't want to be with the person anymore.... don't lie to them and create a false reality of 'everything's okay'. If someone waited til after my birthday I'd be mad, because I'd rather spend that day with people who do care about me and want to be with me.

But that doesn't make it right! Some people just have to have a scene when they break-up. I saw that all to often --- they'd wait for a party, dance or whatever and then act. Kind of selfish, but then shows everyone the kind of person they are.

one can afford to wait for a day or two . Should spoil the event and create stigma

If you don't want to be with them anymore, any day is a good day to break things off with them.

However if that person would not be expecting it and loved you dearly and considered their birthday as the one very special day for them it would be a double blow that could really hurt. If they believe all is well with your relationship and you break it off then it would matter little what day it is.

Regardless of the relationship breaking up on their birthday would be pretty heartless. Much better to do it before but never on that day.

That's cold up, Be a man and either love your girl more than a game or take her crap after you went for the game. Breaking up is to lame.

Why not? Why should I pretend to like/love someone just because it is their birthday? Honesty is the best policy!

It depends on why you're breaking up. If the person did something despicable like cheating, go for it.
