Is It OK to Break Up With Someone on Their Birthday?

When a relationship is over, it's over. But is it ever OK to break up with someone on their birthday? Rich Santos, a writer for How About We, did just that: "In a past relationship, I broke up with a girl on her birthday," he writes. "As the big day was approaching, and she was making a bigger and bigger deal out of it, I internally thought of ways I could avoid the whole thing -- while wearing a smile on the outside. I realized it was time to break up when a soccer game I was scheduled to play in was more compelling than my girlfriend’s birthday."

Well, if you're more excited about a soccer game than celebrating your girlfriend's birthday, it's probably time to break up. But Santos was torn: Should he show up and celebrate his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's special day with her family? Or was it even crueler to go through motions?

"I thought hard about my quandary. It was inevitable that I was going to break up with her," he writes. "So, was it fair to go through with the birthday, faking my excitement and sending mixed signals? If I broke up with her a week after the birthday, she’d probably throw: 'you were just with my family at my birthday' in my face. But could I ever be horrible enough to break up with her a few days before or even (shudder) on her birthday?"

In the end, he broke up with his girlfriend ON her birthday ... and needless to say, he did not attend the family celebration. Do you think he did the right thing?

Wait one day. It's not like you woke up that day and knew you couldn't be with him/her. You've obviously been thinking about it for some time and you waited too long. Wait just a day.

Way to ruin a someone's day. Why couldn't he have done it BEFORE her birthday. If he had a soccer game, why couldn't he just tell his girlfriend that he was too busy to go to her party and then broken up with her.

I'm not surprised that how many people said yes because a lot of people are mean these days. I agree with you it would be mean though. I would never break up with my girlfriend on her birthday.

Thats just wrong, you stick out the day, have really GREAT birthday sex that night, then sneak out during the night and leave a note on the pillow saying, "Hope you had a great birthday, remember you're special...by the way, I'm breaking up with you. See you around...."

    wink

It's pretty mean, but it's worse to break up with a text message (that happened to me once lol)... and please don't use the words "let's just be friends," or "it's not you it's me."

It's never easy to let someone go you care about. In time you will heal and move on. I look at this way, maybe the person I was with was blocking the way of someone that would be better for me. It's not easy, but doable.

I have dealt with that also. Give it some time, your friend may change her mind. If not people come into our lives for a season, a reason, or a lifetime. You'll have to decide which one it is. The pain will get easier. Don't give up!

It's ultimately up to that person if that's what they feel the need or want to do but, really, what is one more day to wait. Let them at least enjoy their day before you tilt their world.

Well, why he did it was pretty crool. I mean not wanting to but feeling that you have to because you had a freaking soccer game that day, just tell the girl that you wouldn't be able to make it. That simple. If there really is a true reason why that person made a reason to break up with them on that day then I say, yes, you are able to.

if he doesnt want m anymore and made up his mind about it and "fakes" being with me on my birthday out of being "nice", I dont need his sympathy, relationships workout sometimes not always, and it isnt a big deal for to me him being my boyfriend is a easily changed situation but he was married to me and wanted to end it all. I must say it'll hurt in both way. It depends on the level of importance of a birthday from one person to another. To me my birthday isnt THAT important.

Why not, to delay the inevitable and give the person a fake delusion that you are in love with them? Sounds like disaster to me.

    Take care,

It truly depends on why the person is breaking up. A good reason would be if he or she was cheater and caught at it.
