When a relationship is over, it's over. But is it ever OK to break up with someone on their birthday? Rich Santos, a writer for How About We, did just that: "In a past relationship, I broke up with a girl on her birthday," he writes. "As the big day was approaching, and she was making a bigger and bigger deal out of it, I internally thought of ways I could avoid the whole thing -- while wearing a smile on the outside. I realized it was time to break up when a soccer game I was scheduled to play in was more compelling than my girlfriend’s birthday."

Well, if you're more excited about a soccer game than celebrating your girlfriend's birthday, it's probably time to break up. But Santos was torn: Should he show up and celebrate his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's special day with her family? Or was it even crueler to go through motions?

"I thought hard about my quandary. It was inevitable that I was going to break up with her," he writes. "So, was it fair to go through with the birthday, faking my excitement and sending mixed signals? If I broke up with her a week after the birthday, she’d probably throw: 'you were just with my family at my birthday' in my face. But could I ever be horrible enough to break up with her a few days before or even (shudder) on her birthday?"

In the end, he broke up with his girlfriend ON her birthday ... and needless to say, he did not attend the family celebration. Do you think he did the right thing?

No, I think it is a horrid thing to do, just wait a day. This happened to my brother and he treated like a queen. Well treated her really well at least and she ruined his birthday. We went out to the Keg and he sat with his head on the table the whole time.

If you plan on breaking up with them break up with them. If their birthday happens to be the day that urge is finally pushed over the edge, break up with them. What's waiting one more day really going to do? If it's going to hurt them it's going to hurt them, might as well do it sooner rather than later. Just do it in person, please.

Have sex with the person on his/her birthday and make sure it is crazy good, since you can break up with someone after the birthday. You also do not have to get the person a gift if you are breaking up with them the day after.

It really depends on why you're breaking up with them. If you're breaking up with them simply because you don't see your relationship moving forward, you should wait until after their birthday. However, if you're breaking up with them because they've mistreated you, then yes, I think it's absolutely okay.

A birthday doesn't just come from nowhere, you know in advance that it is going to happen, so why can't you break up a couple of days before? That way you wouldn't have to fake loving them so much on their birthday.

You might as well take a crap right on their cake. I think after it's almost as bad. But I think it should be done before. That way they can say, "I'm determined to have a blast without you," and though they'll think about it, more than likely they will still have a good time.

Doing it after their birthday is terrible, since you'd have to fake your way through it to prevent doing it on that day. But actually doing it on their birthday is just mean spirited. Do it before hand so that they can at least look at the Birthday celebration as a morale booster after crappy news!

Heaven's no ! I don't have the heart to hurt a man in any way, especially on his birthday !
I would break up with him long before his birthday or I would celebrate it with him just for old times. That is just plain heartless & mean. I would never want a man to do that to me.

If you're not in it 100% and the other person thinks you are, it's not fair to either you or that person to keep it going. Even if it is their birthday, they should be mature enough to understand that you did the right thing by not faking it. I'd be humiliated if I knew my guy stayed with me out of pity.

Way to ruin a someone's day. Why couldn't he have done it BEFORE her birthday. If he had a soccer game, why couldn't he just tell his girlfriend that he was too busy to go to her party and then broken up with her.

I'm not surprised that how many people said yes because a lot of people are mean these days. I agree with you it would be mean though. I would never break up with my girlfriend on her birthday.
