Is It OK to Break Up With Someone on Their Birthday?

When a relationship is over, it's over. But is it ever OK to break up with someone on their birthday? Rich Santos, a writer for How About We, did just that: "In a past relationship, I broke up with a girl on her birthday," he writes. "As the big day was approaching, and she was making a bigger and bigger deal out of it, I internally thought of ways I could avoid the whole thing -- while wearing a smile on the outside. I realized it was time to break up when a soccer game I was scheduled to play in was more compelling than my girlfriend’s birthday."

birthday

Well, if you're more excited about a soccer game than celebrating your girlfriend's birthday, it's probably time to break up. But Santos was torn: Should he show up and celebrate his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's special day with her family? Or was it even crueler to go through motions?

"I thought hard about my quandary. It was inevitable that I was going to break up with her," he writes. "So, was it fair to go through with the birthday, faking my excitement and sending mixed signals? If I broke up with her a week after the birthday, she’d probably throw: 'you were just with my family at my birthday' in my face. But could I ever be horrible enough to break up with her a few days before or even (shudder) on her birthday?"

In the end, he broke up with his girlfriend ON her birthday ... and needless to say, he did not attend the family celebration. Do you think he did the right thing?

no never do that! that is one of the worst thing you can ever do to someone is break up with him/her on him/her b-day. if you going to break up with someone at lease wait 3 days after her b-day or before. really, people. can we try to be nice to people an their birthday or any other day.

If they're a total P.O.S. But if they are...they won't care. Actually I've always heard there are a lot of breakups around Christmas time so...maybe they are similar in terms of expectations and the stress those expectations can create.

Unfortunately for any hurt feelings, but it could be for the best. I've never had to do it, but if someone doesn't when they are feeling disinterested, the other will either expect presents and closeness and not receive or you might do more for someone you no longer care. Break up at any time, but stay friends with anyone who is truly a friend.

One's birthday is the most important holiday of the year. My brother did this to his now fiance, and it wasn't because she cheated on him or anything, he just got scared of how serious the relationship was getting. So not cool. Both my mom and I had a serious talk to him about it.

My daughter went thru the whole, b'day, some kind of occasion, V-Day, Anniversary , holiday, w/e...and if things weren't going well, a break up would happen anyway. Guys like to ditch a girl in spring and/or just before a major holiday or occasion. Thats a bonafide Fact! Is that cuz they are cheap? It's for sure 'cuz they suck! I only said Yes because if it's inevitable, then so be it. Sooner to move on & forget them.

No, that's just awful. my birthday is a very special day to me, i'd hate for someone to do that to me. the only time i'd break up with someone on ther b-day was if they were and absolute JERK, and a terrible person who deserved. then i'd purpously do it just to make him mad ;-)

Sounds like you are all about yourself anyway so no surprise you would do that on YOUR birthday...Picking out a special day, holiday etc to break up with someone just puts unnecessary emphasis on it!

I didn't pick my birthday as the day to break up with her, my birthday just happened to fall on the same day that I finally took stock of my situation and realized I had been dating a callous and perpetually morose misanthrope for the past two years who had gradually but destructively degraded my self-esteem and sense of wellbeing. In the aftermath of the breakup she harassed and threatened me and my friends for the next month or so, to the point where the police needed to get involved.

So looking back I'd say I had every right to be all about myself in that situation.

My birthday is my favourite day of the year. I spend it with my brother who I rarely see otherwise, and my parents, and my three best friends. I bake, go out for a huge party and receive basically a billion presents. If somebody were ever to ruin that day for me by breaking up with me I would kill them. If they broke up with me beforehand I'd deal with it, even after, but never on the day.

Well then. It's not illegal, but it's certainly rude. "I'm breaking up with you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
Just do it beforehand and save her the heartbreak. Yeah, it'll still make her upset, but on her birthday?!? You have to be joking.

My girlfriend dumped me on my 21st way back in '78. We were together for three years. Very low. Why do I still recall this with clarity? Because it was on my birthday!!!

A birthday is the BEST time to break up with somebody because that can be her birthday present, and you can cap it off by appearing at her birthday and saying:

    Happy birthday to you.
    You belong in the zoo.
    You look like a monkey
    And smell like one too!

Just get it over with before hand. If the person you broke up with decides to proceed with their party/gathering/meal with family/friends they'll at least have some people around them who can comfort and support them. Breaking up ON the birthday is just low class and shows how very little one cares about the emotions of the other person. Breaking up after is just sending mixed messages.

He should have broken up with her before her birthday - as soon as he was sure he didn't want to see her anymore. At least that would have been honest.

    defiantely not! how unconciderate!
if you wanna break up, you have so many other chances.
there is NO WAY you suddenly thought of breaking up on their BIRTHDAY! you either were thinking about it before, or it could come to you later!
