Is It OK for a Woman to Go Braless?

Times have really changed since the days of burning the bra. Now, if a woman chooses not to a wear a bra, she is all but shunned by everyone around her -- especially other women.

A recent letter to Slate's "Dear Prudence" advice columnist brought the fairness of this (or lack thereof) to our attention.

A woman wrote in to complain that she owns a business with two female colleagues -- but one has been showing up to professional events without wearing a bra.

"This concerns the other two of us, because we have a relatively conservative clientele, the market has been extremely cutthroat for the service we offer, and we always want to put our best foot forward, "Mountains out of Molehills" writes.

So is she really making mountains out of molehills? Indeed, Prudence thinks the third businesswoman should "truss up her gals" ASAP.

"There you two are, trying to put your best foot forward, but all anyone notices is her bouncing chest. If her lack of undergarments is so obvious, your female clients are going to wonder what's up (or not) with your partner. And your male clients are going to have a hard time focusing," Prudence writes.

We agree with Prudence that a professional event is not the place to go braless. But if you're small-chested, perhaps going sans bra once in a while -- say in the hot summer months, or for a certain dress -- is not such a big deal.

Why should you be uncomfortable all day not getting enough air in your lugnes?

Why the view on men as sexcrazed animals who can't focus if the hair is showing (in this case the nipples through a shirt). Guys have nipples, women have nipples. What's next, women being obligated to cover up their hair everytime they leave the house?

But could a woman's bra actually be dangerous to her health?

"Our research has shown that the bras issue, we believe is the leading cause of breast cancer", said Sydney Ross Singer, who wrote a book about what he believes is a link between breast cancer and bras.

"In fact to look at breast disease and ignore bras is like looking at foot disease and ignoring tight shoes," said Singer.

They looked at past behavior, including how tight the bras were and how long the women wore them. Here's what they found:

If a bra is worn 12 hours a day, there was a 1 in 7 risk.

If a bra is worn 12 hours a day, there was a 1 in 7 risk.

And women who didn't wear a bra had about the same rate of developing breast cancer as a man.

"So what's happening with the bra is that women are preventing the proper flushing of fluid and toxins out of their breasts," said Singer.

Singer claims a bra is too constricting, interfering with the body's lymphatic system.

This causes toxins to build up, eventually causing cancer.

"If you get rid of the bra, your breasts will finally be able to flush out the fluid," said Singer.

But mainstream medical doctors dismiss the study.

"There's no evidence in any of the world research data that I'm aware of that supports the fact that breast cancer risk is increased by wearing a bra or a bra that's too tight," said Dr. Ermelo Barrera of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Barrera says women should get mammograms to reduce risk factors and not worry about their bras.

    "," said Doctor Hussein.

Doctor At if Hussein, Medical Director at the Memorial Cancer Institute calls the bra study interesting, but said, "It really is hard to tell you wearing the brain it was the contributing factor."

He says it's not the bra, but the risk factors of the women who wear them that is the deciding factor.

"Women who may be overweight tend to wear bras, therefore I would say the factors that contributed to those women wearing the bra contributed to their high risk rather than the bra itself," said Doctor Hussein. He said the issue should be studied more.

But despite criticism from the medical community, Singer is sticking to his mission saying, "There’s absolutely nothing good about bras, it's completely a fashion accessory."

He is encouraging women to banish their bras for better health, saying, "We live in a culture where women feel insecure with a natural bust line, but if the price of fashion is disease, then you have to decide whether you want to participate in that or not."

Singer is now studying women who go bra-free to find out if they have lower rates of breast cancer.

I'm a C almost D. I go braless almost all the time. I wear one to work. Otherwise I'm a natural girl. Grocery store, shopping, beach, whatever. It's a woman's choice. The western world is really the only place where bras are the "social" norm. They are ONLY for aesthetics. Bras do not prevent or cure sagging. No one has the right to tell someone what they can or cannot do, especially if it is only based on personal beliefs.

Why is it that because I don't wear a bra I'm "trashy"? Am I to understand that the natural position of my breast is provocative, but pushing them up to my chin isn't? Just because I don't wear a bra doesn't mean that my nipples are constantly greeting people, I wear a camisole or layers, so my nipples are just as visible as someone wearing a bra. I'm really at a loss as to why people care whether or not I wear a bra in the first place. If you're a girl and you want to wear a bra, please do so. And if you're a man who doesn't prefer the braless ladies, no one is forcing you to date or marry us. But please, please, leave my breasts alone.

Singer's center conducted a study involving five thousand American women, half had breast cancer.

They looked at past behavior, including how tight the bras were and how long the women wore them. Here's what they found:

Women who wore a bra for 24 hours a day, had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer.

Ermilo Barrera of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Barrera says women should get mammograms to reduce risk factors and not worry about their bras.

"Watch their weight, exercise, drink only in moderation and don't smoke," said Doctor Hussein.

Doctor Atif Hussein, Medical Director at the Memorial Cancer Institute calls the bra study interesting, but said, "it really is hard to tell you wearing the bra in itself was the contributing factor."

But despite criticism from the medical community, Singer is sticking to his mission saying, "there's absolutely nothing good about bras, it's completely a fashion accessory."

Hey, I love boobs and would like to see a woman braless (or topless) all the time. However, you're talking about a business I can understand if your breasts are small enough and not bouncing everywhere and/ or your shirt is not see-thru.
I would be more inclined to talk about her tits rather than business and would also think that her business is hurting because she is trying to show off her breasts in order to gain more business and I would than NOT want to do business with her company.

Obviously the size of her breasts are a factor in the should she/shouldn't she. Mine are not big so you can't really tell if I am or aren't. If they were huge I'd truss them up because I wouldn't want them flapping in everyone's faces.
But at home the over-shoulder-boulder-holder comes off!

There is an appropriate time and place for bra-less ganderings... but usually not in the workplace. Wear a bra girl!

they should be using a bra if they aren't small, or even if they're going out in public, it just irks me that "some" women that have a bigger bust wear thin or light coloured shirts that show their nips to the world. i was brought up to always wear a bra no matter what.

but that's just simply "my" opinion

& apart from that, doesn't just being without support all day give anyone a backache?

I don't wear a bra, but I don't wear see through shirts, I wear layers, so my "nips" don't show :) And my back actually feels better now that I stopped the bra wearing, not to mention no more soreness.

and then cry that people objectify you too, i bet.
Jesus, dress appropriately for public consumption, that should be common sense, have some standards.

There's never a good reason to view people as objects. Think about what you're saying. Seeing the shape of someone's body, not even seeing their actual skin, is a reason to see someone as an object.

Wearing your body in a comfortable and natural position is inappropriate and a reason people will objectify youbut uncomfortably contorting your body to attain a more aesthetically pleaseing shape (see: corsettes, foot binding) is somehow not objectification and much more appropriate.

They do have standards, they're just opposed to yours.

Is there any reasoning to having a society where woman make themselves uncomfortable in order to make people's eyes happy besides "it's icky"? If we all had 3 eyes we'd be used to that, we could easily get used to women not wearing bras. And why should we get used to women not wearing bras instead of women wearing bras to please society? 1) It's a made up standard and 2) it's a bigger priority for people to be comfortable, not alter their body to fit standards, and not have a double standard than people being uncomfortable with it because they don't see it very much (ironically women doing the very thing that makes people uncomfortable more often would make people quit seeing it as a big deal.)

Personally, if she wants to go without a bra, let her. But she needs to see that there are some times when you Do need one. Like at those business meetings. Or you could go by Dar's motto.

edit: I don't like going without one though.
