ABC Company decided to give all of its employees a 5% raise in 2012. Joe who works in the stock room received a $1,000.00 increase based on his yearly income of $20,000.00 while Fred who is the operations manager received a $10,000.00 increase based on his yearly income of $200,000.00. Joe is furious that Fred and others in management received ten times as much as he did. (Premise taken from an article that appeared in our local newspaper) In your opinion is Joe justified in feeling as he does?

Across the board percentage raises are never right - it is called treating employees equally when in fact it does not. It only means that the company leaders do not have the guts to evaluate employees based on their performance because it leads to law suits - if people would stop the idiotic law suits, then employers would stop the across the board raises.

In a way, that's what unions force on employers. In a union situation, raises are determined over a set time period for all union employees, in most cases based on years employed rather than personal achievement. You never get ahead but you don’t have to worry about anyone making more than you.

And it pays losers the same pay as those who work very hard and/or do excellent work. There is not incentive to excel and that is a bad thing

Exactly, but there are many that think it's a wonderful thing! Equal pay for the masses!

its fair cause everyone got the same percentage. when we get a raise at our hospital its basically the same thing if i wanted more money i should have went to nursing school or whatever.

Damn, I meant to hit "I think."

I think that I would have given Joe a raise and the the management jack squat then see how much the management whines and bitches. Because, odds are Joe is barely keeping afloat. But that's just me. ^_^

It’s all relative. Both Joe and Fred may be barley keeping afloat although their life styles are far apart. Joe barely able to pay the mortgage on his $150K home and keep up the payments on his Ford Focus while Fred has a hard time making his monthly payments on his $500K mortgage and BMW.

Maybe Fred is just irresponsible with money?

I would just rather give the lower people on the totem pole a raise than the people up top. that's all...

Why is that, if they all worked hard for the company they all deserve the same raise. As far as Fred goes, In reality people that make more money have a different life style than those that make less. Owning a big home and a nice car are some of the perks from getting a good education and hard work.

I'm sorry, but how can you not live off of $200,000 a year?

It is because Joe does actual physical labour and Fred is a paper pushing desk jockey. The company could not run without people like Joe OR Fred, but Joe doesn't make that much as it is and Fred makes plenty. Also, giving Joe a 5% raise will cost me $9,000 less each year than if I had given them both a raise.

Sure anyone could live on $200k but when you do you tend to buy the better things in life after all that's the reason some people work so hard to make the big bucks. As I stated it’s all relative. The more people make the more people spend so they really are no better off and in many cases worse off than some that make less.

Joe is lucky. The economy is bad, most people aren't getting raises, they're getting laid off.

Joe is a whiny baby. It is called a cost of living raise and most company's give them out each year. It is fair and equitable. This is why Joe works in the stockroom instead of management.

Joe should be happy he has an extra $1.000 minus taxes to spend or save.

Joe is an ignorant envious low skilled putz or he would have already had a 200k job and a 10k raise. He just needs to shut his trap and go check the coffee or the paper in the copier or something.
