Is it acceptable to have co-educational swimming?

Greenswallow 2011/09/13 02:41:17
at my daughters school next year,(9th grade) in PE there will be a swim unit and boys and girls have it together? Why is this allowed? Wouldn't this make girls feel uncomfortable, being in a bathing suit around boys. Wouldn't boys use this opportunity to harass or humilate girls?

Why would you have a problem with this? This is a big problem with America culture. It's a human body and a bathing suit is a practical thing to be wearing in a pool. Not every situation where human skin is being shown is meant to be sexual. This is a normal part of human development. By making her feel ashamed of her body and making something like swimming with boys "dirty" you're going to give her a complex.

Yes it's fine. School isn't just about academic learning, it's also about social development, and we certainly swim with the opposite sex as adults, so it must be advantageous to have schoolchildren do the same.

Not if you were dressed like we were in my college swim class. We were not allowed to wear ANY suit at all. That was in the year 1960. One poor guy who was likely gay developed a terrible problem when doing the backstroke one time. Most of us tried not to point and laugh.

In my 9th grade class, it depended on the individual girl's self-confidence. If your daughter is okay with her body, then I see no problem. Boys were at least mature enough to not make fun of the girls when it comes to their body straight to their face. If they did, there were always other girls there to gang up on them and tell them off. Even fellow guys would tell the boy off! Not all guys are jerks. Besides, I bet the girls will be in one-piece swim suits right? If your daughter went to the beach with friends, she would be okay even though there are guys there right?

I don't think you should be too worried unless your daughter isn't comfortable. Then you could give the teacher a letter and she'll have study hall during that unit, but that could be embarrassing for her, being the only girl skipping it.

The worst that can happen is that the guys will have "built in rudders" for awhile. I was on the swim team twice in my High School, and we never had a problem with co-ed swimming. It was just a reality of the situation, never made us visibly uncomfortable, and if we where, we learned how to deal with it.

Anyone who was crass enough to harass or humiliate a girl on the team (or even just swimming) was usually in for a severe ass-chewing or even beating from the other guys. There where some lines you didn't cross.

It's great for parties, not a good idea for every day curriculum.
