Is Ice Cream 'Addictive'?

Did you ever keep going at a pint of Ben & Jerry's long after you knew you'd had enough? There may be a scientific reason for that. A new study suggests that ice cream is as powerful as a drug -- and might be addictive, ABC News reports.

ice cream

"We believe that means the more an individual is consuming a high-fat, high-sugar and high-energy food, they develop a tolerance of it in a similar fashion that you see happening with drug addiction or alcohol addition," said researcher Kyle Burger of the Oregon Research Institute in Eugene, according to ABC News.

The researchers found that adolescents who ate more ice cream over a two-week period enjoyed milkshakes less -- and showed less activity in the area of the brain associated with reward, suggesting that the more you eat ice cream, the more you need to eat for your brain to realize that it's a tasty treat.

Sounds a bit like the effect of drugs on the brain, says Dr. Bob Gwyther, a professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.

"Addicts exhibit behaviors that are harmful to themselves (and they know it), yet they continue to engage in the behavior," he told ABC News. "Picture someone standing in front of the refrigerator with a pint of ice cream, eating the entire carton, despite the fact that they are obese, diabetic or whatever." We've all been there ... now that you know the science, do you think ice cream might be addictive?

This pool needs an "I'm not sure" button. Anyway no I doubt ice cream is addicting, literally. But I do think it's extremely good in terms of taste and can make people want it (I would know, I love icecream lol)

It goes beyond addictive. Every time I get a carton in front of me it forces me to eat the whole thing. Not my fault blame the ice cream manufacturers it's all their fault.

More B.S science. How can you compare Ice-cream to crack? Give me a break. In this case air is addictive or water is addictive. It may be for some but not in the general term of the word, addictive.

I mean, a) I'm no scientist and b) sure, if you're wired that way any food could prove to be your kryptonite, but I think it's a pretty big leap to say: Ice cream makes you feel good; Ice cream every day makes you kinda bored; Conclusion: You're going to want more and more ice cream because you crave the same satisfaction you got the first time you had it. I do love a caramel ribboned dulce de leche from time to time, but when I decide to lay off it for awhile, I don;t kill for it , I don't lie for it. I just want it because I am bored and it taste good.

Sugar is addictive, not ice-cream. When I think about it though... what good thing do I enjoy that isn't addictive? Pleasure can become an addiction.

Well, in a way, yes. But so is ANY sugary or otherwise yummy food. We like tasty things and want more. That's just the way our brains work.

I'm in the middle. My still developing taste buds crave for the creamy substance, but there is the occasional bore that comes with it. It has to be the right flavor, brand, ratio of ingredients. Then comes the time you get the bowl so perfect, like new snow. I usually savor the moment. The ripples formed perfecrly on top, slightly decorated with the sparkling ice. It puts me in the mind of fine silk, glistening. Then comes the part where I can slowly take my first bite, being careful not to ruin all of the fine dessert. *drools* Nah, but I like gelato better.

As a native Vermonter I grew up on it...the first taste of B&Js; I ever had was Chunky Monkey, but my personal favorites are Dublin Mudslide, Bonaroo Buzz, Phish Food, Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz, Cherry Garcia, Half Baked and What a Cluster.

Kroger has this new line out that is to die for, Private Selection Amaretto Cherry Cordial Ice Cream (in the black container) and Private Selection Maine Blueberry Cheesecake.
