Did you ever keep going at a pint of Ben & Jerry's long after you knew you'd had enough? There may be a scientific reason for that. A new study suggests that ice cream is as powerful as a drug -- and might be addictive, ABC News reports.
"We believe that means the more an individual is consuming a high-fat, high-sugar and high-energy food, they develop a tolerance of it in a similar fashion that you see happening with drug addiction or alcohol addition," said researcher Kyle Burger of the Oregon Research Institute in Eugene, according to ABC News.
The researchers found that adolescents who ate more ice cream over a two-week period enjoyed milkshakes less -- and showed less activity in the area of the brain associated with reward, suggesting that the more you eat ice cream, the more you need to eat for your brain to realize that it's a tasty treat.
Sounds a bit like the effect of drugs on the brain, says Dr. Bob Gwyther, a professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.
"Addicts exhibit behaviors that are harmful to themselves (and they know it), yet they continue to engage in the behavior," he told ABC News. "Picture someone standing in front of the refrigerator with a pint of ice cream, eating the entire carton, despite the fact that they are obese, diabetic or whatever."
