Is Goodwill marking their prices high in your area?

They have in my area. More significantly so in the minority section of town. For a few dollars more in some cases I can buy a brand new 'something' at a discount department store.

They used to be affordable but the prices have soared and I don't go there very often anymore because of it. They get things free/donated so I don't feel their pricing is fair....I realize they have to pay their workers but it is crazy......

But it won't last long. Most people are smart consumers, and when they see something that can be had new for just a buck or two more. They most likely will not buy the used at GoodWill. Why pay $8-10 for a used toaster when you could get the same on a sale at Retail stores? So, eventually these thrift type stores will have to drop the prices or end up filling garbage dumpsters.

It used to be that you could go to certain Goodwill stores and you knew they picked up from wealthy areas. I had a friend in college who could spot designer clothing and dressed amazingly well on a shoestring. Now in our area they have a store for Goodwill that is specifically high end merchandise and jewelry that's been donated. I don't have a problem with that, it goes to a good cause. There are many such outlet stores. I donate mainly to Christian Community Action which has four stores and their income goes to provide clothes and food for the poor plus they have a number of completely furnished and stocked apartments for victims of domestic violence and their children. I would rather donate to a cause like this than have a garage sale.

Even though I'm not Catholic, I donate used goods to St. Vincent de Paul. I've checked out several of their stores and they do not try to scalp their customers the way Goodwill stores seem to be doing in my area of the country.

I have a problem with an organization receiving freely donated items and then turning around and trying to make an unreasonable amount of money on what they got for free.

St. Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army are my favorites. The only St. Vincent's is in downtown B.R. Goodwill is just around the corner. I usually donate to local churches of all faiths.

I wouldn't drive all the way there for the purpose of visiting their store, but if you're in Hammond, try checking out the St. Vincent de Paul store there. (Good luck finding parking.)

I went in looking around recently. And a beat up couch was $ 350.00. I go down to Rooms to Go in their outlet room. A new couch is 375.00. the same with the Salvation Army. The same goes for clothes. We have a new thrift store called Plato's Closet in Houston, and they sell clothes for about the same price & in more cases better shape.

Goodwill and Value Village both started too raise their prices. I do not know if it is true but I heard Wal Mart bought the value brand so that might be one of the reasons. They started being more profit driven.

Thanks for the heads up MkB. I have a ton of stuff to donate so I will make arrangements for the merchandise to go to a place where it's badly needed rather than the Goodwill.

there's only one in my rural area ..
(So nothing to really compare it to .. other than a Wal-Mart)
I've noticed that there's an Auction Site that they have up and running at this time ..
    no matter what ..
the local one is not that great ..
(and I do think the prices are higher than they need to be)

I bought a photograph of Eudora Welty reading a book at Goodwill some time ago. It was signed by Welty and the professional photographer, and authenticated. It amazes me what people will discard.

Since I am not working right now, I have not shopped for clothing for awhile. But the Disabled American Veterans store used to be my treasure trove.

Dark dress shirts, neck ties, and jackets I used to find in plentiful supply, and you would be surprised the designer labels I would run across.
