Is 'Flashy Spending' a Sign Men Want a One-Night Stand?

It's no secret that nice cars and fancy clothes can be a man's way of showing off to the ladies, but WebMD reported a study that shows "flashy spending" is specifically aimed at short-term romance.

[A] study found that men who are interested in short-term mating -- think one-night stands -- are more likely to spend money on flashy products meant to broadcast their desire. And it apparently works. Such men are seen as more attractive, but only by women who are likewise only looking for a short-term sexual relationship.

This puts midlife crises in a completely new light.

Often men do use flashy spending, showing off to lure women into a one night stand. They do this to put a guilt trip on women, hoping the woman will feel she owes the man a night of sex. Men also do this when very attracted to a woman, to keep her interested in seeing him. I loved dating men with great sport cars. Being flashy can also be part of a man's ego, wanting to be admired in public places. Many men will spend money on a woman because he really likes and admires this woman, with intentions of a lasting relationship.

It's generally a sign that he's desperate and clueless.

Then again, I have a friend who could easily be mistaken for this sort of thing, if you just glance at the surface. He drives a souped-up sports car that he obsesses over (I've seen him freak out when a bird pooped on it once at lunch...he had to stop by the carwash on the way back to work). Rock star hair-do. Kind of a Brad Pitt clothing style. Rock hard body like he spends hours a day at the gym...

The car's because he was raised in a family or racers, and he's more than a little OCD. The clothes are chosen by his wife (to whom he's completely and totally devoted). The body's from spending hours a day gutting and redoing this insane mansion-style home that she talked him into buying. He's actually extremely frugal with the money.

About the only thing that can honestly be held against him is the hair (and, yes, I am totally jealous *grin*)

Oh, yeah. The actual point to my answer:

For most men, the sign that we want a one-night stand is, generally, that we walk up to a stranger and start talking.

I'll do it at random, because I enjoy talking to women. Most of my friends just assume that I'm a shameless slut, because they don't.

Some people never grow up. If a woman can't accept me for who I am, she's better off without me. Next!!!

I understand what you are saying, but it often takes outward appearance, playing big shot to get a woman's attention first. When you first meet someone you don't know each other. A man could be a millionaire sitting at a bar looking like a bum. I bet most women would avoid this man not knowing he is very rich. Physical attraction usually takes place first. Both men and women have different taste in who attracts them. Attraction will only go so far, once you get more aquainted. If a man is so gross, most women would lose interest no matter how much money he spends.

That is the best description of a shallow woman I have heard in a while. Men also by the way.

So, a man has to make himself into a peacock to attract a woman? No thanks, lol.. I'll stay single.

If you go to a club wanting to meet someone, would you wear ripped jeans, dirty sneakers and smell.? I doubt anyone would approach you, so maybe you should stay single. A woman will only get to know you if she wants to get near you first.

Why such hostility? Wow! Lol.. I'll take your advise under consideration.

PS: I've been told I smell great. ;) As for ripped jeans and dirty sneakers, they have their place and uses.

It is not a sign of a one night stand necessarily, but it is a sign of a character flaw. He needs all the help he can get. I had a guy tell me his first wife had been a playboy bunny. He then said, I guess that says a lot about her? I said no, but it tells me a lot about you.

We have men in their 60's who spend a lot on fixing up their cars in order to go to the beach and pick up girls. One they pick them up, they spend a fortune on dinner and alcohol. Yes, they do it for the one night of blazing passion. LOL

Try just doing the things you enjoy, in general. If none of them allow you to meet women, broaden your horizons.

*Much* more effective than the dinner and booze.

In my studies in school we were taught about various species and their mating habits. All species develop habits from centuries of finding what works and applying it. Men like the pictured fellow do what they do because it works on the women who are attracted to it. They deserve each other.

It shows they want people to pay attention to them. The dude in the photo would be lucky to get anyone to spend time with him, so he may want to try for something that lasts longer than one night.
