It's no secret that nice cars and fancy clothes can be a man's way of showing off to the ladies, but WebMD reported a study that shows "flashy spending" is specifically aimed at short-term romance.
This puts midlife crises in a completely new light.
[A] study found that men who are interested in short-term mating -- think one-night stands -- are more likely to spend money on flashy products meant to broadcast their desire. And it apparently works. Such men are seen as more attractive, but only by women who are likewise only looking for a short-term sexual relationship.
This puts midlife crises in a completely new light.

Then again, I have a friend who could easily be mistaken for this sort of thing, if you just glance at the surface. He drives a souped-up sports car that he obsesses over (I've seen him freak out when a bird pooped on it once at lunch...he had to stop by the carwash on the way back to work). Rock star hair-do. Kind of a Brad Pitt clothing style. Rock hard body like he spends hours a day at the gym...
The car's because he was raised in a family or racers, and he's more than a little OCD. The clothes are chosen by his wife (to whom he's completely and totally devoted). The body's from spending hours a day gutting and redoing this insane mansion-style home that she talked him into buying. He's actually extremely frugal with the money.
About the only thing that can honestly be held against him is the hair (and, yes, I am totally jealous *grin*)
For most men, the sign that we want a one-night stand is, generally, that we walk up to a stranger and start talking.
I'll do it at random, because I enjoy talking to women. Most of my friends just assume that I'm a shameless slut, because they don't.
So, a man has to make himself into a peacock to attract a woman? No thanks, lol.. I'll stay single.
PS: I've been told I smell great. ;) As for ripped jeans and dirty sneakers, they have their place and uses.
Girls like nice cars, and we like girls.....
*Much* more effective than the dinner and booze.
By themselves, they just come across as creepy.
The dude in the pic, wooo, what a loser.
