Is Emo Hair Bad for Your Eyes?

Side bangs, also known as "emo" bangs, are popular with women (Nicole Richie) and men (Justin Bieber). And let's not forget emos. So imagine the panic when an optometrist told The Daily Telegraph that the emo hair style could cause lazy eye, or amblyopia.

"If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won't see a lot of detail," Andrew Hogan of Australia told the tabloid. "And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic."

But msnbc.com ontacted Dr. Leonard Press, the New Jersey eye specialist who co-authored the clinical practice guidelines on amblyopia for the American Optometric Association, and he scoffed at the scoop, saying it's really only a problem for people younger than 7 years old.

"The story would only be true," he said, "if you had somebody young enough, and if that person never looked out of that eye -- if it was blocked 24-7. The reason it’s false is that you don’t have that constant deprivation." We're inclined to think that it's safe to get as "emo" as you want to with your hair, assuming you're over 7. What do you think?

I don't know, but it drives me crazy to have my hair in my eyes. I always pull it back.

I don't know about it being hard on the eye o the personher their hair that way but it sure is hard on my eye having to look at it. Man, that's unattractive and scroungy looking.

It looks unattractive to me so I'd have to say it's bad for my eyes.

    1: I'm not an "emo"
2: Who the hell do you think you are?
3: You obviously have some sort of fear of the truth?

I've known people with their fringe over their eye and as far as I'm aware they haven't had any problems with their eyes.

No, I doubt it, not saying they don't look stupid. Sheepdog hair and a face full of piercings is always good for a person.

As a hairdresser, I can honestly say that I've heard a lot of excuses/posturing against certain hairstyles, but this one takes the cake. And side bangs have been done long before the emo kids got a hold of them. Nobody complained about their eyesight then, just a lot of clients growing them out or cutting them into regular bangs when they got tired of having their hair in their eye all the time.

I doubt there is a lot of merit to these findings but I couldn't care less either way. Now I'll just kick back and watch the ensuing EMO kid attack on this piece.

That would be a stupid stereotype. There is no such thing as "emo". It's just another term people use for a group of things or people they don't like. Also, a lot of teenagers do what you said, not just the "emo" ones. That's just how teens are until they grow up and life becomes clearer to them.

And another thing. Everyone likes and dislikes different types of music. What you think is absolute rubbish could be the music that inspires others. It all depends on the person.

Oh I'm sorry, I guess I forgot that you were never a teenager... You're VERY stereotypical, biased and boring to listen to. You never know what one teen may be "crying" about, but I'm sure you've had problems - doesn't everyone? And "horrible music" - that's stupid. Every body has the right to like what they like, it's none of anyone's business, really. And "Emo" is a derogatory term that can be considered quite offensive - it's a label - but I'm sure you'd know all about those.
