Is Emo Hair Bad for Your Eyes?

Side bangs, also known as "emo" bangs, are popular with women (Nicole Richie) and men (Justin Bieber). And let's not forget emos. So imagine the panic when an optometrist told The Daily Telegraph that the emo hair style could cause lazy eye, or amblyopia.

emo hair

"If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won't see a lot of detail," Andrew Hogan of Australia told the tabloid. "And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic."

But msnbc.com ontacted Dr. Leonard Press, the New Jersey eye specialist who co-authored the clinical practice guidelines on amblyopia for the American Optometric Association, and he scoffed at the scoop, saying it's really only a problem for people younger than 7 years old.

"The story would only be true," he said, "if you had somebody young enough, and if that person never looked out of that eye -- if it was blocked 24-7. The reason it’s false is that you don’t have that constant deprivation." We're inclined to think that it's safe to get as "emo" as you want to with your hair, assuming you're over 7. What do you think?

Neither was I; the original post was intended to be half-satirical. When people started to come down on me for daring to have my own opinion, I thought I'd have some fun. And I did.
I'm 44 yrs old; I work in a factory. Do you really think I give a crap about Emo hair?

Stop being stereotypical you jerk. Emo people are awesome and so are goths. So what if they dress differently or look different it doesn't matter because if they're nice to you then THAT'S what matters NOT how they look

Stereotypes exist for a reason; they have a basis in truth, or they wouldn't be stereotypes. See, my concern for them isn't so much how they look, really, but how they look at life.

not always. At my school none of the cheerleaders are the most popular girls or whores or sluts. One is a band drum major. Two more could be considered gothic and they are super nice. All three mentioned are in the drama club and love our band. All very smart and not sterotypical at all so your can shut you trap

    "Stereotypes exist for a reason?"
So all blondes are dumb? Are all jocks popular? Do all guys only want to get in girls pants? Are all cheerleaders whores? Are all black people in gangs? Are all girls not good at sports? Is everyone who goes to therapy crazy? Is everyone who reads a geek? Is everyone who wears glasses smart? Are all muslims terrorist? Do all children not like vegetables? Does every kid not like milk? Does every teenager steal? Is it true that you have to be anorexic to be a model? Is everyone that is overweight lazy? Are all Asians smart? Are all blacks ghetto? Are all Americans snobs? Are all Mexicans illegal immigrates? Are all blacks criminals? Are all blacks drug dealers? Are all Jews rich? Do all teenagers not care about school?

Yeah, stereotypes exist for a reason.
    Just shut your mouth.

Are all 15-year-old girls pushy, overbearing, self-righteous, impudent know-it-alls who mistakenly think they have the world by the throat, like we so often see on TV and in the movies?
No, not "all", but many, or no one would have come up with the stereotype to apply, in the first place. Where do you think stereotypes come from?

And like Eva, you didn't read the whole of my thread, did you?

So stereotypical. You don't know exactly what "emos" go through. Maybe they have a perfectly good reason for being as they are. And their style of clothes is completely irrelevant.

Made my eyes hurt a little before I was forced to cut my hair. But I like this hairstyle, and will certainly adopt it when possible. I don't particularly like emos though, but that is as far as it goes, for I would not discriminate against them.

I've never thought about it causing 'lazy eye' but I do believe it could cause vision problems, between having vision blocked by the hair itself and the chemicals in the hairspray on the hair that's IN the eyes...I believe it could POSSIBLY do damage.

do you have hair blocking your eyes? because if you have hair blcoking your eyes, then you have hair in and irritating your eyes. The question was about the hair style of having bangs in your face all the time. Again, it could possibly do some sort of damage. But maybe not

I always have a good amount of my hair over my left eye. Infact that's just how I have it trained. I tuck it behind my ear and up in a ponytail while working. I see nothing wrong with having my hair in my face

I also believe sleeping could possibly cause you to go fully blind if you sleep for more than 8 hours everyday. I've stopped sleeping all together! Joking of course. No I doubt it would have a significant impact on your vision. It's more likely that the chemicals in hair dye would have an effect on something

I might have a slight detrimental effect if it was full deprivation all the time. With side bangs you don't actually get that. The effect wouldn't be 'lazy eye' no matter what though. people need to stop being so alarmed over everything.

Idk if it exactly ruined my eyesights but at least emo bangs gave me headaches or made my shoulder and neck stiffed. Now I have none of above. Just bob hair with straight bangs above the eyes.
