Evidently, it is in New York City. A couple waiting for a subway spontaneously started dancing to a steel drum player. They were returning from a swing dancing event and while waiting for the train, started dancing. Police told them to stop. When one of them got out a camera, he was wrestled to the floor and both were arrested.

Guess crime in the Big Apple must be WAY down, since police have time to make sure people don't dance while waiting for a subway train.

It seemed a real overreaction to the situation. It's always difficult to say what the whole or real story is from what you read, but taking it at face value, it seems a cop had his underwear in a real twist, especially when the guy got out a camera. Sounds like that's when the cop wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him, then arrested him and his dancing partner.

I sort of thought that unless the dancing was actually bothering other people waiting in the subway, it was unreasonable to tell them to stop.

In NYC, it should have taken dancing into other people and knocking them off the platform. There was a steeldrum player making music, and THAT was ok. I think it was the camera which ticked off the cop.

In this present age, haven't we lost enough of our freedoms? Some forms of dance come from a persons heritage, There are many forms of dance. I do not condone suggestive dancing in front of children, but, As long as the dancing poses no form of physical harm to another, what's wrong with it? But in heart, dancing is something that I can not do anymore, due to being dragged, thrown from, and run over by a hit and run criminal. I MISS it. I walk with a cane now, and from my side, Dancing is a form of self expression. Someone stole that freedom from me, So I say to all that can ...do it! Do it with a smile! And do not let anyone take away that right to celebrate 'being alive' from you.

In this case, it sounds like the police officer was being a real grump, but who knows for sure?

If it's dirty, disrupting, disturbing, or a plain old flash mob, yes.

I thought that if it was during a crowded time and it was bothering other people, well, yes, of course. However, they haven't arrested anyone for a Flash Mob in NYC, which is probably a lot more disruptive, even if fun, than dancing while waiting for your subway. Sounds like the cop was being grouchy, rather than trying to prevent a problem.

Agree, fact remains that when a cop give a person a lawful order - time to comply.

It wasn't clear from the article if 1) the police officer was actually giving a lawful order--that is to say that what they were doing was actually against the law, or 2) whether or not they actually stopped. It does say that the officer tackled the guy when he got out a camera, which makes it sound like they did stop, but that the cop did NOT want anything recorded. It's always interesting to wonder what really went on. On one hand, it sounds pretty innocent--dancing to music while you're waiting for the train, but not really bothering anyone. It could be just that. It could also be that they were bugging other people so much that the police were called. That wasn't clear at all from the article.

Visiting NYC is like touring a police state. My daughter was reprimanded for playing hopscotch while waiting in line for the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building. So she obediently sat down on the floor, at which point she was scolded again because sitting in NYC is illegal except on designated public benches. After standing for several hours, we finally got to the top and of course she couldn't see anything, so I had to lift her above the crowds to see anything. At that point, the security guard was ready to throw me escort me out of the building. A miserable experience - I don't recommend it.

They seem to be so busy worrying about what should be non issues, because they don't want to look at the real problems.
