Is cusing unintelligent?

My friend Logan (who is very sophisticated) said he did not swear because it seemed to make one look dumb. Do you think swear words can make someone seem less smart than someone who only uses clean words?

Talking "slang" makes you unitelligent... unless you are with family or friends

honestly, yes. Although it shouldnt. It's true if you were to pair up someone with good language than with another that uses slang and curses. But in truth, it doesnt make the cusser any dumber...or smarter

Upon first impression, it often does make people seem less intelligent. However, this is not because it is dishonorable or wrong to curse. Curse words can be used in many, many ways and there is a curse word that fits into almost every sentence. Since it is used to show expression and because of its diversity, people often substitute curse words in. This takes the place of other vocabulary and adjectives that can be used. For example, one could say "this medicine tastes like shit." If 'shit' was taken out of the equation, words such as chalky, bitter, disgusting, unflavor, etc. could be used. Since a large vocabulary is often an indicator, or at least in appearance, of intelligence, the use of swearing gives off the feeling of diminished intelligence. While I do not think that cursing actually reduces intelligence, as I tend to curse, I do think it gives off that impression because of reduced vocabulary usage.

That proves his point. That you have to use that one word to express all of those different things.

If you drop the F-bomb every other word, you sound like a moron, but it doesn't make the person less intelligent. I think that cussing is more of an irritation for some people, and others use it as a form of communication. Wierd, yes. Unintelligent, no.

i hear kids and i mean really young kids using the f word pretty freely. It sounds terrible and i bet they're not taught anything at home either. But where do they get this stuff? ADULTS.
We need to clean up our vocabulary. You don't know how awful it sounds until you hear a really young kid use it.

In most cases, I think cussing doesn't affect how smart one seems at all. Cussing after every other word can sometimes make someone sound unintelligent, but in general, typical cussing makes someone no less or more intelligent than anyone else.

cussing is nothing more than a way to express oneself. the fact that such words are considered offensive is just a societal stereotype.

It depends on how it is used... but I really see no need for curse words. You can make your point without using vulgar language. I personally never curse. It doesn't sound pretty... and I don't like fitting in, anyway. I'd rather not go with the crowd... I know tons of people who curse. It doesn't make them look smart, that's for sure.

I only think it does if they are doing word after word after word. If that's half their sentence, yes then it does sound very, very stupid but if they do it once in awhile for a reason, then no.

Though using profanity is not an actual indicator , it is often interpreted as such. Many are of the mind that cursing indicates a lack of vocabulary. It does often disclose a lack of discretion.
