most definitely not....but it can be a bad goal.....and some things, like integrity and conviction are not meant to ever be compromised.

it's the basis for adult interaction. children don't know how and will tantrum rather than give an inch but adults understand that it is necessary.

As long as it's not just one side doing all the compromising.

Compromise doesn't mean you have to sell out your morals, but it does mean you have to understand the gray areas of life. Can I give in on this to get that? Is the outcome more important than proving the other guy is wrong? What is the real cost of giving in a little?
There are certain ideologies, clearly represented on this site, that are not capable of seeing anything but black and white.

I see what you mean, Chris. But the ones I'm running into are simply immature.

Immature minds can only see things in the simplest terms. When a child wants something he can't have he doesn't think, "Well maybe if I do this for mommy she will give me that candy." He screams and cries because it's all he know how to do.
Unfortunately we can't send the people you talking about to their room! :^D

There is nothing wrong with compromise as long as it is done by both sides that there is fairness for all.

"Compromise" can be a bad word if compromise is being applied to one's ideals.

Not generally. If we had more this, this be a better world. Only when compromise means absolute destruction ( such as how some compromised their beliefs and countries for the Nazis i.e.) is compromise a bad thing.

The Nazis didn't rule by compromise, they ruled by terror and military might.

But the Nazis came to power because other nations compromised their principles for fear of war. If France and England had imediately declared war on Hitler when he broke the Treaty of Versailles, Poland may have never fallen and the war may have gone differently.
  • just me Jacksane 2012/05/07 02:00:46

They did tolerate and actually approved some of the violations, which started as soon as the Treaty was signed. The abuses only became greater when Hitler came to power with the conscription of a military and the annexation of Austria yet, England, France and Italy approved of his annexing the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia in 1938.

Most citizens have no tolerance for preemptive wars, especially those who lived through WWI and personally experienced the tragedy and horror of war. By the time England and France declared war after invasion of Poland it was over much more than compromised principles.

There is a difference, L1, between compromising your values or moral integrity, and compromising with a partner or friend over where to have lunch.

There is, but I am referring to groups that did compromise their beliefs rather than do the right thing. It has happened before.

No, although in foreign diplomacy it's important to recognize a mortal enemy whose notion of compromise effectively makes it an arrow in the quiver.
