Given our situation, certainly. And if we weren't such keen capitalists, the whole world would suffer because their economies are inextricably linked to ours. :O)

What government gives, it can also take away. I would rather be able to take care of myself, make my own choices in life, and accept responsibility for those choices, than to lose freedoms and rights that have been paid for in blood by generations of men and womwn who have faught for this country and those freedoms

With capitalism, you are granted an equal opportunity to prove yourself at the whims of the market. Socialists believe in some magical money fairy that grants people money whenever they may wish.

Socialism is the perfect form of government for the perfect society with the perfect people. America is far from perfect, therefore, capitalism works most efficiently.

But we will not have the opportunity to experience capitalism because we are in a socialist system that was established by the wealthy for the wealthy... So unless you are a sycophant you will not have the opportunity to step beyond the "new middle class"..(About $1.5 million year) What we have is a Plutocracy...

of course the free enterprise system is the job creator. socialism takes away freedom and individual rights and crushes money making jobs. so many people dont understand what true capitalism is. it is what jobs are all about.

In my opinion, it is much better. I would much rather have the right to do for myself than have the government do it or control it for me!

Actually, yes. Should have looked up the different forms of capitalism before answering. The US is basically a social market economy form of capitalism which is better than straight socialism.

Are they mutually exclusive? What about a combination of the two?

The balance between the two needs to be right.. either way certain people will take advantage and play the system.. one favors the rich the other favors the poor.. People who are totally against socialism seem to forget that despite the people who just play the system to take advantage, there are still people in genuine need of extra help and support.. without some aspects of socialism these people would essentially be left to starve to death.... if you are an anti-socialist you are effectively condemning innocent people to a life of suffering and in some cases death... Where does the real evil lie?. with those who sit on their ass and play the system, or with strong right wing agendas?

But it's not an either / or (false dilemma); we have a mixed system out of necessity. It needs fixing.

Capitalism provides a goods or services that the people want. Socialism steals from those that make those goods and services and give it to those that sit on their fat ass all day long.

Socialism leads to Communism. Socialism destributes the wealth so that no one wants to work because it will be taken away.

Capitalism is shooting a deer and eating it, socialism is gathering a group of hunters to kill an elephant and share it. Both systems have their benefits and their flaws.

But obviously a mix of the two is to be preferred...

Capitalism and freedom are closely tied together. Socialism by its very nature is anti-freedom.

I'm not sure capitalism works without a little socialism - which is better, well - I don't think one works without the other either way.

Laissez-faire policies haven't worked too well before....capitalism needs some regulation, and people need some safety nets. Capitalism with a touch of socialism is where it's at.

Not sure. What I DO know is that a mixture is what seems to work best. Extremes of either are fraught with destructive, counterproductive danger.
