Is not opening your door for an annoying Jehovah's witness "censorship?"

Is turning off your phone to ignore an intrusive caller 'censorship?'

Is walking away from a creepy stranger who's bothering you on the subway "censorship?"

    restraining order

    NO.

If people can still make their own posts, and engage other members in conversation, then their freedom of speech isn't being impeded, no matter how much anyone may whine about it.

Not everyone is going to like each other, or want to talk to each other; that's life.

It's true. You disagree with the cowards and they'll block you.

But you don't know that they've blocked you because you disagreed with them; just because it happens after a disagreement doesn't mean that's why.

BS. I have made some totally innocuous statements, but because the author disagreed, bam, I'm blocked. They're intellectual cowards.

Again, since you can't communicate with them once you've been blocked, you don't know that. It's not like you can ask them. They could block you because they think you're psychotic, or irritating, or because you get on their nerves. You don't know the reason because there's no further discussion to find out.

I do know for certain that is why. I don't throw personal attacks on the internet. It's counter productive.

You can't know for certain that that's why---people who block seldom give the reason, and you certainly can't ask them, therefore, there's no way for you to know---you're just assuming that you know, and in reality, you don't.

I sure can. It's called the process of elimination. I wasn't rude. I didn't throw a personal attack so why else would I be blocked? Oh yea, they didn't like my comment. It's that simple

Nope, just means that a person has no interest in what you have to say but is not preventing you from saying it anywhere else you wish. Just not to them.

Actually, a very good question. Although, for the most part, I would say no because it is merely exercising your freedom to not have to deal with someone, it can also be seen in some slight way as censorship due to the curbing of the blocked person's ability to at least post of the forums brought forth by the person that had blocked them.

Depends on what you mean by censorship. If it's an individual, they are just choosing not to communicate by not listening. If it's a business or a site like SH, then it can be.

Even if the site blocks persons it is still not censorship .
As long as the internet is large enough for the speaker to create their own website.

That really depends the circumstance. Everytime I've been blocked I've felt as if it were for reasons to avoid having my comments posted that we're contrary and threatening to their often mislead or just plain wrong ideals. Of course it's also possible that some people are blocked for being a nusiance or stalker, or rude/hostile unprovoked.

I am relatively new to SodaHead and have only blocked one person. That was after I got a scary weird private message and wanted nothing more to do with the individual. Blocking here is not censorship. The other person can still post questions and comments all he or she wants, just not to the blocker. Blocking does nothing to interfere with anyone's right of freedom of expression. It is a way of protecting yourself from people who offend or frighten you.

It is rude to turn your back on someone who is having a conversation with you, simply because you can. I have been blocked by only one person, for absolutely no reason. I have not used profanity, agression or abuse. So as far as i am concerned it was rude, and i feel that is an abuse of power in the same way as censorship, refusing my right to a reply. Agree to disagree by all means.

Define "blocking?" If someone were to block another from their Facebook page, etc., then, no...of course not. Because nut jobs, or people who piss you off, should be avoided. Especially on social networking sites!

It takes away MY freedom of speech, and my right to an opinion on what is "supposed" to be, a "public" forum. It's what has turned SH into a right wing political blog with little chance for anyone else to counter the hate! A shame!
  • Melizmatic ALofRI 2012/06/20 17:02:33

    Not really.

You can still make your own posts discussing any topic you like, within the parameters of the TOS.

You can still talk to other members who don't have you blocked, and answer their questions.

Real censorship is completely removing one's ability to express their opinion; kinda like how the Egyptian government shut down the internet access to their country a few months back.

All blocking on this site does is stop you from engaging a person who doesn't want to talk to you.
  • ALofRI Melizmatic 2012/06/20 17:48:53

You're not annoying, disrespecting or harassing me, so I have no need to block you.

And if you didnt want to hear my opinion and decided to block me, I wouldnt bitch & whine about it; I'd laugh & move on.

No one is required to listen to anyone else's opinion.

Correct. So, unless there is harassment, or one sided disrespect...(most on here "annoy" others, because there is disagreement), let's stop blocking. I'd be happy with that. Jeez! Imagine where the country would be if Congress could live under those rules....again.
  • Melizmatic ALofRI 2012/06/20 23:22:58
    Melizmatic
    Nope.

People here don't annoy me for merely having a different viewpoint than mine; they annoy me when I have made it clear that I'm tired of talking to them and they still wont shut up, and move on... as if harping on the same talking points endlessly will somehow "make" me change my mind.

A pest is a pest; period.

You do what works for you and I'll continue to do the same.

    Different strokes for different folks.
