BUSINESSWEEK.COM reports:
Apple (AAPL) is now locked in a fierce patent battle with Samsung over tablet designs—a sure sign that, whoever is right, touchscreens are converging into gadgets that look like everything else.

So as Apple prepares to launch its next iPhone in September, with a slightly bigger screen, here is a prediction—Apple devices will soon project holograms like you’ve never seen. This is not mere speculation, but insight based on Apple’s patents, recent acquisitions, and the business imperative to do something to break free of the tablet clutter.

I want a holodeck. SO BADLY do I want a holodeck.
    holodeck
Keep working on it, Apple. People have been trying to develop holo-technology for years, and if anyone's going to actually design a holodeck in my lifetime, it'll probably be you guys.

Apple will go the way of SCO Unix... they will relegate themselves to be a company that no longer produces anything new, and instead makes a profit by suing everyone who makes anything that even remotely looks or acts like one of their old products.

They haven't com up with anything new in years. Look a the iPhone, they let the jailbreak community do their software R&D; and are always years behind the curve in hardware, and yet if they put an Apple logo on a brick the Apple zombies would pay top dollar for it.

Along with flying cars and robot maids, The Jetsons had them in the early 1960's.
As I see it, they're already 40 years overdue for becoming commonplace in reality.

Maybe that's why it's supposed to be $800. Plus (yes I'm a huge nerd) science and technology is way more advanced than the public knows.

But still way less advanced than it should be.
I know someone who attended Penn back in 1983 and they even had holograms then.
He says everybody did the same thing, make chess pieces.

I suppose its possible... Not sure about Apple, but there's already tests with the Xbox360 Kinect that do 3D mapping with three Xbox Kinect devices (and three Xbox360 machines), so why not? However, I don't think it would be priced for the middle and lower class. This seems like Tony Stark's rich boy toy....too bad there's not any money anymore, like in Star Trek --- the world still runs on it and likely will for more years than we care to count - unless of course it completely ends this December, lol.

Next? No. Sometime in the next 10 years? Yes. A good functioning projection keyboard and is still being perfected. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the next big thing is, but we will see.

While they may attempt them, it would be too damned expensive if they did develop it. Not to mention you would have to wait every year to get the updates that should have been in the first release.

I had a friend that works for a phone store. He knows about the future items, and holographs are a part of it. You use a special glove or finger gloves to touch the holograph so it moves.
Personally, I don't see the point in a holographic PHONE, but computer items such as what Tony Stark is using below would be very useful. I KNOW a company will come out with it eventually. Hec, they probably could now, but they can't release it yet.

Todays holigrams are made fr mutiple projectors very carefully projecting into a thin mist from multiple angles. No where near ready for small scale deployment....

Maybe once touch Screen have been intergrated into every corner or everyday life holograms will emerge.

i remember using them as a kid some 40 years ago..it was 2 gun fighters at some science fair , or the worlds fair or something, and thought wow, i could hardly wait to use them again..never seen them again..it was a arcade table, with a big like microwave glass plate, you put coins in and the 2 guys would have a duel, you being one of them, they were tiny compared to the glass plate, but this stuff was around decades ago, makes you wonder what has really been developed over the years that we don't know about.

I saw one just like that, and played it. It was called Time Traveller: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

It was actually done by a CRT projected onto a curved mirror that made it appear as if a little man was standing there. It was very cool at the time, and i had hoped it was the future of video games, but apparently it was a one shot wonder. This couldn't have happened on a open table though, because it was in the box for a reason. The nice thing was that the box was open, so you could reach in to try and grab the guy, but of course it was just an illusion and it was like grabbing air, and your brain was like.. wha??
