You!

Air conditioning is stale and recycled air... so it's not a big surprise that there's a belief that it's not too good for you. Do you buy it?

SLATE.COM reports:
A few weeks ago, an academic journal called Weather, Climate and Society posted a curious finding about how Americans perceive the heat and cold. A team of researchers at the University of Oklahoma asked 8,000 adults living across the country to state both their political leanings and their impressions of the local weather.

I mean it sounds bad, but where I live the air is so polluted I don't think it matters if the air has went through an air conditioner or not. You know what sounds worse? Me collapsing from a heat stroke in my own damn house!

I have allergies and if I open the windows to cool the house down, I start getting a runny nose and itchy eyes. So yes to air con.

During the heatwave in 1995, my great-grandmother in Rhode Island died from heat stroke because she refused to turn on the air con.

For June/July of 2011 and 2012, the heat was akin to that of an oven.

    Now THAT'S bad for me.

It can be. They're good ways of spreading diseases - someone in an air conditioned building has flu, everyone will get it...

I hate air conditioning. I wait 8 damn months for the heat to come and I am not wasting it by sitting in a refrigerated house. Also the stores crank it up so high that you can't wait to get out of the store with chattering teeth! why do we accept wintery freezing temps indoors in the summer yet heat it up in the winter? Makes no sense to me. I love Canada but I hate the cold and the snow.

Wrong. I don't know who did this study but it is definitely WRONG! I've built many homes and in order to meet the building codes, you must supply outside air to your mech. room where the furnace and air conditioning unit blower is placed. All HVAC systems require outside air or you could risk serious respiratory health consequences as a result.

Like anything, when used in excess it can have a negative effect on you,but when used prudently, there is less danger.A lot of bacteria, not the good kind, involved
  • Papillon Dave1969 2012/08/03 21:14:30

That bacteria will die either in the compressor or the air handler before it ever gets to your nose. Now mold on the other hand, comes in at and through walls, and stays in moist airless areas and eminates from the walls. That is the respiratory bugaboo here.

If any of you have ever read "Ethan Frome" which is a phenomenal classic, it shows how everyone in the North East is depressed from the constant winters. In the south, it was the same with constant summers. Is it unhealthy? Possibly. However, so is not having air conditioning or heating. lol

air conditioning reduces humidity and reduces stress on the body,,, also ir can mix filtered ouside air into the environment which acually reduces the stale air in the room
