Is agnostic and atheist the same thing?

Usually Atheist is thought to mean a person that is at least relatively certain that there is no God. And an Agnostic is generally thought to be someone who feels that they cannot be sure that there is no God or has some degree of doubts. But I have seen Atheists who have spoken of the idea that they have a degree of doubt as well. It hardly matters. People are who they say they are usually. Some Catholics believe that everything that the Pope says is true and others have almost complete doubt in him and his decisions. It's all just terms in the end. A person thinks what they think, which is usually more important than labels.

Agnostics are people who do not have a religious preference/ are unsure whereas atheism is total disbelief in religion.

But the basic answer is that Atheists tend to believe in nothing and Agnostics say they just do not know for sure. Now that is just a very very basic answer.

That's not quite true or accurate. As an atheist, I believe in a great many things, I just cannot put faith in what I consider absurd. Every atheist I've ever encountered believes similarly, so to say we "tend to believe in nothing", is just another absurdity religious types try to propagate.

Did I not say that was a very basic answer. It is also the typical but people seem to be changing the meaning of so much these day that soon nothing will mean something.

I have listened a many atheists and all seem to end up with nothing in the end...or they shift to a philosophy and that is something other than theistic.

Not ascribing to any certain accepted philosophy, theistic or not, simply does not mean believing in nothing, no matter how you want to interpret it. We as humans, every one of us, have beliefs that mold our lives, it's inevitable. Atheists just don't hold a belief in a god or gods.

An atheist believes that there is not supreme being or any kind of diety. An agnostic admits to not knowing and not being sure. Life as if there were but expect none.

See Sir Dagon's answer below. There are many degrees of agnosticism. Basically, we agnostics tend to be analytical of mysticism of all sorts, and simply require proof. In my case, a burning bush talking to me and I'm not on some mind altering substance, telling me it is the voice of God, and I'm there. But I'm going to look for the hidden speakers and gas pipes first.

I was Agnostic once..

A lot of people seem to be very confused as to what the terms atheist and agnostic mean. Atheist and agnostic are two totally different answers to two totally different questions. Atheist or theist are the answers to the question, "Do you BELIEVE that God/Gods exist?". Atheists would answer "no", theists would answer "yes". There are no other answers, either you believe in their existence or not. If you are unsure then you don't know what you believe and you have some self-exploring to do. Now Agnostic and gnostic on the other hand are the answers to the question, "Do you KNOW that God/Gods exist?". It's a claim have knowledge or not, it's not dealing with belief. Agnostics would answer "no", and gnostics would answer "yes". There are no other answers because either you know, or you don't know. I'm an agnostic atheist because I don't claim to know if God/Gods exist or not, I just don't believe that they exist. Likewise I know religious people who are agnostic theists, and don't claim to know that God or Gods exist, they just believe and have faith that God/Gods exist. Any claim to knowledge (gnosticism) bears the burden of proof. So if you claim to know of a God or Gods existence or nonexistence, the burden of proof is on you to provide evidence of such a claim.
