Actually I was thinking "No you shouldn't be engaged at 14"! It was only when I saw I was in the lowest sector I realised I'd clicked the wrong answer.

If I think back to what I was like at 14 I would have been hopeless in any sort of relationship... I was still a child. I was nearly 30 the first time I got married!

oi! My mom used to tell my #2 sister that she was embarrassed that she had a 27-year old, unmarried daughter. My sister said she was PROUD! And then my mom said if my sister didn't get married soon, she'd ask our grandfather to bring back a "Male Groom" from Japan! Boy, you should have seen how fast my sister decided to get married after hearing that!!!!!

Someone shouldn't really be engaged until they are in their late 20s. Most young marriages don't work out too well. My brother and sister-in-law got married in their early 20s though and they have been married since and they both are 27 and they have a daughter who's 10 months old now so they are some exceptions. I can't believe my niece is almost a year old now. Her birthday is September 23rd. I'm Uncle Duck though haha.

Fourteen is a great age to be engaged to your education, I would even say dedicated to it would even be better so that you actually have a future, in the event Romeo turns out to be Termenato. In all seriousness it isn't just school and education to be considered. There is a lot of life to live. From traveling to places you haven't been to meeting other people and really enjoying life. There is no guarantee that things will work out, you have to look out after yourself first, and that means putting yourself first so you have life tools to reach adulthood.
    I'm just saying!!!!

I think so. It's too underdeveloped emotionally and physically, and marriage is forever. At least it's suppose to be.

WAY too young--many parents don't even let their children date till they're 18.

    Depends on your society.

A century (or 2) ago, this was commonly done in many societies. Now, it is not.

A century ago the average lifespan was only 54 years.

    True.

But, societies had to adopt to so many life-shortening factors. So, in the absence of anti-child-labor laws, the youths were expected to pick-up the family-trade or take apprenticeship in their desired industry as soon as they were able. So, they were used to "adult" responsibility at a "young" age. So, they were mature enough at that stage of life.

In our current settings, though, it is definitely not recommended. Generally, our school-dominated youth today cannot bear those adult responsibilities at such an age.

Actually that's all pretty irrelevant... the median age for first marriage in 1890 was 26.1 for men and 22.0 for women and then it actually started dropping and didn't get back up to those levels until the 1980s!

I think the point is that Americans managed to be married at age 13 back in the 1700s and had it work, but now it's a social taboo.

Yes I think it was 1763 that the lowest age for marriage was fixed at 16. Prior to this date, the church accepted the marriage of girls aged 12 or more and boys aged 14 or more. In addition, a dispensation on licence could be obtained from a bishop which allowed marriage at a younger age.

I'm a bit of a stirrer... I like to keep things bubbling along!

Yes, I think for modern America, it would be impossible for 13 year olds to be self sustaining and it would distract too much from their education. However, this isn't true in every country; I argue that anywhere that a 13 year old can be self-sustaining is a place where 13 years should be able to marry.

Most people didn't get married then until they were established, either a job or a homestead.
